The upcoming disaster film sequel, Twisters, teases unnerving drama with its newly-released trailer. The latest preview sees stars Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones battle Mother Nature at its fiercest as a tornado outbreak threatens their city.

On May 8, Universal Pictures unveiled the newest sneak peek of Twisters, seeing the "tornado ranger" Tyler Owens (Powell) and Kate Cooper's (Edgar-Jones) contrasting styles of tornado chasing as they're introduced to each other and work together to save their area. The duo face various close calls as they battle the elements, including a fire tornado which forces them to retreat as it quickly gathers speed and threatens to wipe out everything in sight.

Twisters Star Glen Powell Confirms Twister Sequel Is 'Not a Reboot'
Twisters star Glen Powell addresses the upcoming Twister sequel and how it compares to the first movie.

The trailer also features Transformers: Rise of the Beasts star Anthony Ramos, who plays Javi, Kate's colleague, who goes through an emotional rollercoaster as the outbreak relentlessly torments the town. Superman star David Corenswet and Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Katy O'Brian also feature in Twisters in undisclosed roles. The latest trailer follows the first one released in January, while footage of the film debuted at CinemaCon in April.

Twister Gets a Follow-Up Film, But It's Not a Direct Sequel

Twisters is the long-awaited sequel to the critically and commercially successful Twister, which starred Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton. Though the film is a follow-up to the 1996 original, it's not connected to the first movie, with Powell describing it as a "standalone story" with different characters and premises. O'Brian has also described the film as "good, family fun," with the movie likely garnering a PG or PG-13 rating. Universal will distribute the feature-length project across North America, while Warner Bros. will do the same internationally.

Twisters Cast & Character Guide
Twisters is a sequel to the 1996 box office hit Twister, introducing a new set of tornado hunters that includes Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

While Powell and O'Brian are optimistic about Twisters, the film will need a strong box-office performance to cover its $200 million budget. Twister made $495.7 million against a $92 million budget, earning two Academy Award nominations following its release. Production on Twisters wrapped last December after beginning in Oklahoma seven months prior, with filming affected by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning Minari director, Lee Isaac Chung, helmed Twisters, having also previously worked on Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 3. Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski crafted the Twisters story, with Mark L. Smith penning the screenplay and Steven Spielberg producing the sequel like he did with the original.

Twisters opens in theaters on Jul. 19.
