Less than six months ago, The Killers released their latest greatest hits compilation, Rebel Diamonds. That set was a minor commercial success in the U.S., as the band still commands a sizable fan base. They certainly have an album’s worth of material for such a compilation, but one tune stands out as their biggest and most beloved—even decades after it was released.
“Mr. Brightside” remains The Killers’ most famous single. It helped make them superstars more than 20 years ago, and now it’s rising on the Billboard charts as interest in the tune has not waned much in the many years since it dropped.
This week, “Mr. Brightside” is gaining ground on a pair of Billboard rankings. The single rises and falls fairly regularly, and during any given week, there’s a chance that it could be found on one or two lists—but the fact that it surges on a pair of them at the same time is noteworthy.
“Mr. Brightside” sits highest on the Alternative Streaming Songs chart. On that tally, which tracks only the most-streamed “alternative” cuts in the U.S., it jumps two spaces to No. 14. It has previously topped out at No. 5, and now it’s inching closer to finding its way back into the top 10.
Over on the Rock Streaming Songs chart, the tune is faring similarly. It also climbs a pair of rungs on that genre-specific streaming list, lifting to No. 23. Last frame, it was down in last place, but the cut was able to turn things around.
“Mr. Brightside” broke The Killers in a major way in many major markets. It was released as the lead single from the band’s debut album Hot Fuss in the fall of 2003. It went on to peak at No. 10 on the Hot 100, and it still stands as their highest-charting and only top 10 smash on that important tally.
