Most ’classic’ sounding modern Maiden tunes?
While Maiden’s music has continued to evolve throughout their career there is a distinct musical difference between Maiden when they rose to fame and Maiden today.
The music is pretty different, but the vibes are still there. What modern Maiden songs do y’all think sound the most like ’classic’ Maiden?
Off the top of my head I feel like The Alchemist and New Frontier have strong vibes from back in the day.
Janick's short rockers often utilize the gallop, which is interesting considering he wasn't present on the classic albums. So his short songs often have a classic sound..
Had to check some writing credits to confirm but yes, you are absolutely right. A lot of Janick’s stuff does have them ’old school’ vibes.
Out of the Silent Planet, I had no idea was co-written by him is an example of a perfect blend between the old and the new for me. Honestly, the entire BNW album I would describe like that.
Right, my mind went right to The Alchemist.
Already mentioned, but The Alchemist and The Wicker Man
The Alchemist is very classic!
Stratego
By Modern I’m assuming you mean post reunion so I would say Wicker Man. It’s built around a galloping riff. It has the classic Maiden E D C progression. It has a repeating chorus. The chorus also has some great twin guitar work.
It has a fantastic solo like the old days, in opposite of the modern era where they're doing a lot of autopilot imo
Speed of Light
The first half of Hell on Earth sounds like some pre-90's. Everyone loves that one.
Death or Glory sounds like it belongs in Piece of Mind
Days of Future Past has shades
Maybe Different World?
I’m amazed with Bruce’s voice! He can still crank it out 🤘🤘🤩
The Parchment could be off any album from the 80s. Amazing song
Montsegur
I don't like the passage of time any more than you guys, but some of these "modern" examples are 25 years old.
I was almost certain someone would take it too literally. I personally think of Maiden as 3 eras. 80-88 classic era, 89-99 90s era (the dark ages?) and 2000- modern era.
I could’ve used the term Post-Reunion in my post, however with Maiden albums not coming out every other year it would kinda make Senjutsu the only modern Maiden release. For this particular post at least it wouldn’t make sense to exclude the other 2000s albums especially since they don’t differ all that much musically and aesthetically.
Rock in Rio is the halfway point between the debut and today. The release that is, the actual concert was less than halfway
Wickerman 🤘
The Pilgrim hasn't been mentioned in this thread, but it should be!
The Red and the Black really sounds like a classic Maiden song imo
Sokka-Haiku by MeneerKoekenpeer:
The Red and the Black
Really sounds like a classic
Maiden song imo
Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.
Can definitely find some similarities between the 90s material and the reunion era, but I really can’t think of anything from 2000 onwards that has the vibe of the 80s singles.
The one with the galloping E-C-D...
Benjamin Breeg
Really? For me that song is like the epitome of Maiden not sounding like classic Maiden. Dark and heavy. I loved how unqiue it was when it came out.
I guess this stuff is pretty subjective though tbf.
There is one section of classic 80s galloping
Stratego.
Stratego, Wicker Man, The alchemist, El Dorado, and Speed of light (if it were sped up honestly) are the ones that come to mind. There's definitely bits of other songs that remind me of classic maiden but it's mostly small parts to bigger songs.
How modern? Different World has the galloping beat of many classic Maiden songs.
I can hear "if New Frontier was in the Fear of the Dark".
If eternity should fail kind of sounds like pre blaze maiden
the mercenary
All of them
