Spanish Pyrenees - best place to stay for day hikes

My husband and I are traveling to Spain in September. We will have a rental car. We have 2 nights to spend in the Pyrenees for the purpose of day hikes. We will travel from San Sebastián to Barcelona. We want to do self guided hikes. We walked the Portuguese Way to Santiago de Compostela a couple of years ago and preferred to self guide. We are not looking for difficult hikes - just a chance to explore the Pyrenees based out of one location. Any advice on areas/specific accommodations would be greatly appreciated!

I would base in either Jaca or Sabiñánigo depending on which accommodation suits you best and what hikes you can find out of each place.

A longish drive from San Sebastian, but a shorter drive to Barcelona, you could also consider Vall de Núria.

You can drive to Ribes de Freser from where you can take a rack railway which climbs to about 2000 metres where there is an hotel. As this is at altitude then you can easily access the higher parts of the range. We were last there in September some years ago and there was a ski lift operating that got you even higher (although no snow). A long drive, but of course going direct from San Sebastian to Barcelona is likely to take more than 6 hours.

Also in the area is the Alberg Núria Xanascat. I haven't been there so can't comment on how good it is but at over 2100 metres it's definitely in the mountains.

Thank you! It sounds like the Huesca area offers a lot of options. I’ll look into it further…

Thank you! This may be a little more involved than we can do, but I will look into it further!
