Vicky McClure has opened up about tackling some intense scenes in new psychological thriller Insomnia, with the Line Of Duty star taking up an interesting hobby to keep the blues at bay. In the new Paramount+ series, Vicky plays Emma, a high-flying lawyer with a stay-at-home husband and two children who is tormented by sleep deprivation as her 40th birthday nears.
With Emma displaying worrying and sometimes dangerous behaviour in the show, Vicky admitted that some of her scenes in the show were “really dark”. She added: “You can’t help as an actor to put yourself in their shoes and think how that might feel,” she said. “But I do a lot of dramatic work – I’m drawn to these kinds of roles.”

Vicky said that after a day of acting out heavy themes, she turns to day dancing to stay upbeat – and even set up Day Fever, which are daytime discos she runs with her husband Jonny Owen. “God knows why I’m so happy. I’m day dancing at the moment. It’s massive!” she smiled.
Earlier in the year, Vicky and Jonny revealed that they had started their own club night for over 30s that starts at 2pm and runs throughout the afternoon. The couple married last August after getting engaged in 2017, holding a star-studded ceremony in Nottingham with Line of Duty’s Adrian Dunbar and Martin Compston present.
As for other ways to stay cheerful whilst taking on gloomy roles, Vicky said that working on a relaxed set also helped. “We had six or seven weeks in the house which became Emma’s family home. The crew would be like, ‘Where’s Vicky? In bed?’ I figured I might as well use the bedroom as my own,” she said. “It felt like a very safe place to get into character.”

Despite the intense days of filming, Vicky added that she has no plans to move away from dark dramas. “Life is dark, isn’t it? I love watching comedy but I like stuff where there’s something I haven’t done before, where I can learn something new,” she said.
“I’m in an amazing position right now and I’m always grateful. Plus, I haven’t used a tear stick yet. I’m just a good crier!”
