Sagehens Push Past Early Bruins Pressure to Advance to Sweet Sixteen

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer lacrosse team earned a 19-7 victory over the George Fox Bruins to advance to next week's Sweet Sixteen against the No.7 Ithaca Bombers in Middlebury, Vermont. The Sweet Sixteen matchup will be the first-ever meeting between the Sagehens and Bombers. Shoshi Henderson led the Sagehens offense today with seven points, scoring four goals with three assists. Henderson's seven points push the junior past the 300 point mark in her career, moving her into No. 2 all-time in program history.

How It Happened
In a rematch of last year's Second Round NCAA game, the George Fox Bruins came to play as they put pressure on the Sagehens early. Pomona-Pitzer's Hannah Gough won the opening draw control before Fiona Lewis took the first shot of the game, but the Bruins' goalkeeper made the save to give the Bruins a strong start. Just over four minutes into the game, the Bruins struck first with a goal off a free position shot to make it 1-0. George Fox continued to attack, scoring two more goals in a two minute span to take a 3-0 lead over the Sagehens. Shoshi Henderson was able to score her first goal of the game to cut the lead to 3-1 and get Pomona-Pitzer on the board. Fox continued to attack, scoring two more goals to end the first quarter with a 5-1 lead.

In the quarter, the Sagehens got back to their usual scoring ways as Shoshi Henderson and Fiona Lewis scored a goal each to make it 5-3. The Bruins interrupted the run with a goal of their own to make it 6-3 but the Sagehens closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run with goals from Sydney Landauer, Hannah Gough, Shoshi Henderson, Fiona Lewis, and Grace Tighe, taking a 10-6 lead into the halftime break.

Pomona-Pitzer was able to increase their lead to 13-7 in the third quarter as Grace Warner, Chloe Denhart, and Taylor Glanville all found their first goals of the contest. The Sagehens continued to press in the fourth quarter with Izzy Sabatino scoring 2:29 into the quarter to make it 14-7 before Grace Tighe, Madelyn Katz, Ella Bradley, Chloe Denhart, and Audrey Jacklyn all chimed in to cap off the 19-7 Second Round victory over the Bruins.
