The Fake Boy Band From Anne Hathaway’s ‘The Idea Of You’ Movie Is A Hit On Spotify

Following

In The Idea of You, Anne Hathaway stars as a middle-aged mother who falls for one of the members of a globally-famous boy band. Her beau, portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine, performs a number of tracks throughout the movie, and while the film isn’t a musical, they’re all pretty catchy.

The boy band he’s supposed to be a part of, named August Moon, doesn’t really exist. That hasn’t stopped the fictional group from succeeding on Spotify, where their music is very, very real–and becoming popular.

August Moon currently claims more than half a million monthly listeners on Spotify. As of the time of writing, the boy band counts 686,000 monthly listeners on the platform, which is a figure that many up-and-coming acts would love to reach.

One of August Moon’s tracks, “Dance Before We Walk,” is nearing two million streams on Spotify alone. It is far and away the group’s most popular track, though it’s not their only song that’s racked up a healthy stream count.

Another tune, “Closer,” is about to hit one million streams. Two others, “Guard Down” and “Taste,” have both already passed the half-million play milestone.

For a time, four of August Moon’s songs ranked inside the top 100 on the U.S. iTunes chart. None of them sold or streamed well enough to appear on the Billboard rankings–at least not at the moment–but if they continue to be played non-stop by fans across the country, the fictional act could soon be headed for the weekly tallies.

The Idea Of You arrived on Amazon Prime on May 2, and it’s become a quick favorite on the streaming site. The music from the film started to roll out in early March, likely to generate interest in the feature. For weeks, tracks from the then-forthcoming project were doled out piece-by-piece. Recently, a remix of “Taste” from celebrated producer R3HAB was shared on May 2–the day the movie arrived–which shows that there’s interest in making these songs hits.
