Liam Cunningham was one of the highlight performers from the series as Davos Seaworth. Series creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss had a great working relationship with the Irish actor. After the series’ end, Cunningham was committed to doing another series, but the showrunners told him to ditch that show so that he could come aboard for their next epic series 3 Body Problem.

Liam Cunningham’s Davos Seaworth was a pivotal player throughout the eight seasons of Game of Thrones. After the show’s end, the actor moved on and pursued other acting opportunities. However, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss were not done with the actor just yet and wanted him back on their next passion project.

In an interview with Collider, Cunningham talked about how he had booked another show after Game of Thrones. However, the showrunners got to know about his new gig and called him. They were very direct with him and immediately told Cunningham to drop that show because he was coming with them on their next epic show 3 Body Problem.

Cunningham himself said yes to them without even knowing what the project was and what his role was. The actor stated that irrespective of his role in their projects, when those two call, he rises to the occasion. Cunningham said,

“[Laughs] It’s true! Life’s not fair, David. Life ain’t fair! To tell you the truth, I haven’t told anybody else, I was in serious talks for another project, and obviously, the boys found out about it, and I got a phone call from David and Dan, they just said, ‘You’re not doing that. You’re coming with us.’ I didn’t even know what the project was, and I just said, ‘Yeah, okay. I’ll tell the other crowd no.’ It could have been a day’s work on the other thing, but when those two call, you run to the clarion call.”

Cunningham’s role as Thomas Wade in 3 Body Problem provided a compelling and complex character who wouldn’t back down from a fight when the world is threatened by an alien invasion. He leads the operation to defend Earth, and his character is part of the puzzle piece that moves the show forward.

Liam Cunningham reunited with the Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for their next series 3 Body Problem. The film was another adaptation of a beloved sci-fi book by Liu Cixin of the same name. Similar to how he approached Game of Thrones, Cunningham did not read the novel before starting the show.

The actor did not want to have two blueprints of the same material in his head. For him, the show’s script was the one he was committed to, and he would rather read the book later on when everything was over. Cunningham told Moviefone,

“No, I’m going to wait till I’m done. I generally don’t do it. Even the last project I did with David and Dan (‘Game of Thrones’), I never read those books. I didn’t want two voices in my ear. My blueprint was the scripts and that’s what I was employed to deliver. If I read the books, if I’d had trouble with any of it, I would’ve used that as a reference. But that’s when I think I might be in trouble when I must go somewhere else for information.”

In addition to Cunningham, the series also starred Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chao, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Alex Sharp, Benedict Wong, and Jonathan Pryce. The show was received very well by audiences, and it proved to be a great transition for the showrunners after their time on Game of Thrones.
