Any advice on how to enjoy playing the game?

Help

I've only ever played Fallout 4 and I loved it so much. But I keep hearing that New Vegas is the best among the three, so I bought it on Steam because it was on sale (because of the new series).

The only problem I have is that I'm so used to the combat style of Fallout 4 that I find New Vegas so lackluster. I don't enjoy the game that much, and I get bored easily. I'm hoping the story works its magic on me, though. I just reached the museum of "Bonnie and Clyde". Does the game get any better from there? When do things start kicking? And given that I'm not in love with the gameplay, do you think that the story will be enough for me to forget how bad the gameplay is for me?

No spoilers, please.

Imo the combat is better in fnv. Sure fo4 looks and feels better to control,it's a more modern game.

However,I much prefer no level scaling, the DT and Armor piercing bullets system, unique weapons and a lot more fun weapons to use overall

But yeah fnv is much less combat focused

I think you just aren't into role-playing games, OP. Combat really isn't the focus or why people find New Vegas appealing.

I'm probably still adjusting, but the graphics, combat, and the environment, are putting me off. Maybe because I just keep comparing things to 4, since I started with 4. I love RPGs, though. Skyrim was my first big one, and that game was a 10/10 for me. I'm really interested on why people love New Vegas so much, even more than 4, which is why I want to finish the game, but I'm finding it hard to play it.

Like others have said Skyrim is barely an rpg and if that’s the only one you’ve played, you can’t really be considered an rpg fan

u/Vigilante2011 avatar

I'm curious as to why you people say it's barely an RPG. What makes you guys think that way? How does it differ from New Vegas?

u/Ravyyoli avatar

Well there will never be a definitive line for what is and isn’t considered an rpg as technically you are role playing as your own character in skyrim and sorta fallout 4 as you can (kinda) make Nate be who you want to be, but a general consensus can be made that rpgs are about choice/player freedom and different outcomes. Skyrim literally has no player choice other than choosing not to do certain quest lines which doesn’t mean it’s a bad game however most would consider it a poor rpg.

Now compare that to fallout new vegas where almost every single little quest you do has a choice to be made to tailor to the character you want to create and a lot of those choices impact things in the game and the endings.

Meanwhile Fallout 4 does technically have different endings, they are all pretty shallow choices that are very obvious considering there’s text that states if you do this mission, you’ll be locked into a faction. It’s not very natural and you never really get locked out of something based on a real decision, it’s just kind of forced onto you

A lot of people got started with RPGs when they were much more stat-driven and hell of lot less linear. Fallout 1 & 2, Arcanum, Planescape Torment, The first couple of Baldur's Gate games, Wizardry, Ultima . . . shit like that. Those games usually had multiple paths, no magical compasses pointing you to objectives, dialogue that actually mattered, choices that could have genuinely negative consequences, timed quests, etc. Modern RPGs like Skyrim, FO4, etc. are very stripped down and simple compared to these older RPGs.

Don't get me wrong I've burned plenty of hours running around in Skyrim and FO4 and other games like them and I like them for what they are, but they aren't really RPGs, they're more like hiking sims and dress-up sims, where the world mostly scales to your level, puts big flashing red signs above quest objectives, and incentivises mindless clicky-clicky gameplay. FNV, is sort of a hybrid of that modern and old-school design philosophy.

If you are really struggling with graphics and gameplay, then you might want to look at modding the game. The Viva New Vegas modding guide can iron out a lot of the kinks and bugs, and make the game feel a little bit better without sacrificing its original design.

similar to how fallout 4 isn't an RPG, skyrim isn't an rpg either lol

if you want, you can try to download some mods to upgrade the combat in New Vegas. There are hundreds of different mods that do different things which you can adjust to your liking (same for graphics and textures). If you have the possibilty, I suggest you investigate a bit and see what kind of changes you'd add.

If you dislike the game even with mods then maybe the game just ain't for you. No shame in that, everyone has their own taste and preferences.

NV is an RPG first. Maybe you just don't like RPGs?

u/Vigilante2011 avatar

Skyrim is my all-time favorite game, so I'm no stranger to RPGs. I guess I'll just have to stick with it long enough to love it.

Skyrim is a very mediocre RPG tbh. Good exploration game tho.

Something that made the game far more enjoyable for me is turning on the in game radio

You are going to need to give us more information.

What type of character are you trying to play. What motivates your character?

New Vegas has so much replayability and it caters to a lot. But we can't advise you without knowing more.

I just want a good story, but I can't seem to get over the gunplay. Maybe I just need some time to get used to it. I also keep pushing the wrong buttons sometimes for VATS, etc. I really do want to finish this game, but every time I try, I always compare things to Fallout 4, which is ironic because while everybody seems to be hating on 4 over New Vegas, it's the other way around for me. I really do want to love this game.

Remap the buttons for vats. I'd suggest doing a practice run and dumping points into Intelligence; that way, you have more skill points to play with. Focus one ONE offensive skill (guns, explosives, energy) and maybe one more that isn't about attacking (barter, medicine, speech) and play the story.

This isn't fallout 4, where the side quests are the best part; you're playing a ROLE. Do the main quests, look for Benny, don't do any of the dlc until you've at least reached New Vegas.

I never could get into fallout 4, and I tried so terribly hard to enjoy the game. I love Skyrim, but it could never be considered an RPG. Skyrim never would have reached its peak though without the help of modders/community. After ending Miraak in 2010 the ending quest would break, leaving no way to complete the quest. I wish I could appreciate Bethesda a lot more than I do now, but I at least respect them. If you don’t like Fallout New Vegas, then no harm, no foul, but it’s not a good idea to try and compare it to fallout 4. Lots of people here LOVE new Vegas, including me

You can allways use some mods to get better combat, but in general, use vats a lot because the aiming is weird sometimes, the best thing in new vegas is the story and the stupid amount of things you can do with each new playtrough, give it a time to get used to it.

Don't listen to the gatekeepers that say Skyrim and Fallout 4 aren't RPGs. New Vegas is barely more layered.

That said, for me, I wasn't big on the western vibe. It took me playing the DLC "Old World Blues" to really get into the game.

One I got into that, and the other DLCs, everything clicked into place.

As for the western vibe, it wouldn't be until RDR2s far more superior story to lock me into cowboys and the old west.

Now I enjoy New Vegas far better than I ever have

Man's here getting mad at someone who told a story longer than 1 paragraph explaining how I came to like the game

You wanna play this game, troglodyte?
