What’s Blooming

Southern Magnolia

The Southern Magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora, is garnishing
the gardens with blooms that form a shape like teacups! It is
native to central and coastal plains from Florida to North
Carolina and Texas. In the late spring and early summer, this
garden gem produces large creamy white flowers that produce
a fragrance similar to a lemon. Once the blooms form, woody
brown fruits with bright red seeds will emerge that are often
used in dried arrangements. For best growth, plant this tree in
well-drained, acidic soils in locations with defined landscape
beds that receive sun and shade. You can find this tree on the
pathway between the Moonlight Garden and the Edison
Caretakers House.

Jacaranda

The Jacaranda, Jacaranda mimosifolia, is draped with puffs
of purple! This tree is native to South America. In the early
spring through summer, this garden gem will produce
clusters of lavender, violet, purple, or white trumpet-shaped
flowers along the tips of its branches. Its blooms are
complemented by fern-like leaves. After the flowers form,
2″ circular brown seed pods will begin to emerge. For best
growth, this tree should be planted in well-drained, sandy
soils in a location that receives full sun. The Jacaranda can
be found in the lawn between the Caloosahatchee River
and the Edison Main House!

Go Public Garden Days

Go Public Gardens Week

The annual Go Public Gardens Days celebration of national
public gardens starts today and will run through May 19!
This program was designed by the American Public Gardens
Assocation in 2009 to highlight important topics such as plant
conservation, water conservation, the preservation of green
spaces and home gardening.

We have a sprawling 20-acre botanical garden with all sorts
of landscape wonders that you can imagine, including fruit
trees, shrubs, flowers, flowering trees, herbs, ficus trees,
cycads, bamboo and so much more. Edison used a series of
botanicals in his research and his garden was his living lab-
oratory, while Mina used horticulture to bring people together
and improve communities. Gardening was a huge part of his-
tory with the formation of numerous clubs, flower shows, and
largescale projects that are at the very core of Florida.

Be a part of this movement by doing your part to sustain our
landscapes in Southwest Florida by purchasing a plant from
the Garden Shoppe or attending one of our Garden Talks and
classes that teach people all sorts of best gardening practices.
We hope to see you soon!
