Skeleton Crew may have more surprises than fans were expecting! Director Jon Watts recently gave fans a new synopsis for the upcoming Star Wars series.
While the internet continues to freak out about The Acolyte, some Star Wars fans continue to keep their eyes on Skeleton Crew, the long-awaited Disney Plus series set in a galaxy far, far away. Details about the show have been sparse, but director Jon Watts recently gave a new synopsis for the series, as well as an assurance to new fans.
“It’s about a group of kids that find a mysterious secret on their planet and accidentally get lost out in the galaxy, and it’s the story abut them trying to find their way back home.” Watts told Collider. “You don’t need to have really any prior Star Wars knowledge to enjoy it. But if you do, you can enjoy it on many levels.”
Given how esoteric Star Wars has gotten with some of its recent shows, it’s good to hear that Skeleton Crew is accessible for fans at all knowledge levels. The series also seems to be a large derparture from prior Disney Plus shows, with Jon Watts’ description suggesting a mystery at the core of the story missing from many of its peers.
Skeleton Crew Mixes New And Old-School
Some of the biggest complaints about recent Star Wars projects on Disney Plus are that the shows feel fake, especially as most of them are shot on The Volume. Many worried that Skeleton Crew would follow the same fate. However, according to Jon Watts, they were able to bring back many classic techniques in conjunction with new technology.
“I got to use all the cool stuff on my most recent Star Wars show. We had pre-viz, MOCAP, we shot on the volume, we did everything. But the most fun part was we also used all the old school techniques as well,” Watts explained. “We got Phil Tippett to do stop-motion. We did matte paintings, like real old-fashioned matte paintings. We got an ILM painter out of retirement to come out and do that. So to me, all that stuff is fun, but it’s just another tool, and it depends on how you use it.”
Just hearing the initials ILM is enough to send a shiver up the spine of any Star Wars die hard. It’s clear that Jon Watts is treating Skeleton Crew with a lot of reverence, which is a refreshing change of pace when compared to many other Disney Plus show. Here’s to hoping, unlike other Star Wars projects on the service, the series can stick the landing!
