Fisherman held for murdering wife at Cuddalore
Cuddalore: The Cuddalore old town police on Saturday arrested a 39-year-old fisherman on charges of murdering his wife after she refused to break her relationship with her boyfriend.
Police identified the arrested as Ramesh of Tsunami Nagar in Sonangkuppam and the slain woman as R Soorya, 33. Ramesh, who married a woman named Indumathi 18 years ago and five years later wed her sister Sooriya, used to visit Saudi Arabia frequently to work in a marine resources firm, they said.
Seven months ago, police said, Sooriya joined a jewellery shop in Cuddalore as a saleswoman and developed a relationship with a colleague.
Ramesh returned to the village after a brief assignment in Saudi Arabia, learned about her relationship and demanded that she break it. The two often fought over it, a police officer said, adding that the family elders had arranged a separate house for Ramesh and Sooriya who, however, continued her relationship.
On Friday night, Sooriya was asleep when Ramesh attacked her on the head with a sharp edged weapon. The woman suffered severe bleeding injuries and died on the spot. Ramesh fled.
Later, after a few of the family’s neighbours and others found Sooriya dead and alerted police. After a search, Ramesh was nabbed. tnn
