Arriving in JFK

Hi I’m a woman, very independent, travelling to NY solo (in my seventies). My kids are insisting I organize someone to be there to greet me. I think I will be fine grabbing a taxi myself. Any thoughts? Thanks Carolis it easy enough to navigate. I will have been travelling g for sixteen hours.

Follow the signs for taxis, don’t accept/talk to anyone offering you a ride. At the head of the taxi line will be a uniformed dispatcher who will direct you to a taxi. Tell the taxi where you are going- it helps if you know streets eg Hilton Midtown, 6th Ave between 53rd and 54th streets

If you want to reassure them, you could consider arranging some assistance inside the terminal & to the curb with your airline. https://www.jfkairport.com/at-airport/accessibility-services

A Yellow cab from the terminal dispatcher line is pretty straightforward https://www.jfkairport.com/to-from-airport/taxi-car-and-van-service

Some car services offer "Meet and Greet" services at a premium price & can meet you after you've cleared immigration and customs

Your kids are insisting, but you think you will be fine. All your kids are insisting? What do they know that we don’t?

My “thoughts” are that you are capable.

You’ll be following signs once you disembark the plane to customs/immigration, then following signs to the correct baggage carousel. Of course you can manage to follow the signs to the taxi queue as well. Wait in line, get to the front of the line tell the dispatcher Manhattan. Tell cab driver your street & cross street.

It’s a flat fee. The cabbie will put your luggage into and out of trunk. Payment is accepted by credit card or cash. No difference in price either mode.

I suggest to pay using cash, tip included. More straightforward after a long flight , no change or figuring the credit card reader needed .

Ignore your kids. Follow signs for "ground transportation" which includes "taxis". I see no reason why cash is better, but ask for a receipt whatever you do, for your own safety (not that I ever do that, actually.) Don't forget to tip between $15-20, depending on how nice you think your cab driver is (they're generally a bit silent or surly, but if they help you with the luggage both ways, that's worth an extra dollar or 2.)

Since it's a flat price, the driver is incentivized to take the most efficient route, but if you feel better about it, you can check yourself on your own GPS app on your phone, as they go. Have both your exact address where you're going, and it is also helpful to say "44th between 6th and 7th" (that is, the street and the avenues that it is between) which you can see by looking at a map.

I understand why sometimes it's easier to have a driver waiting. But it's a big airport and finding the driver is harder than just taking a cab, and paying extra for meet and greet isn't worth it.

Thanks so much everyone. I am going to trust myself. I always ask if I feel uncertain. I will follow advice here As we all know kids get very bossy as we get older!!!
