Columbus Prospect Denton Wins WHL Playoff MVP - The Hockey News Columbus Blue Jackets News, Analysis and More Skip to main content

The Columbus Blue Jackets are hoping that they have found their guy.

It's been announced that Denton Mateychuk, the reigning Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy Winner for the WHL's top defenseman, has been named the WHL Playoff MVP for 2024.

Mateychuk played in 20 playoff games in the just-completed WHL tournament. In those 20 games, he scored 11 goals and 30 points. He was also a +19 and had 10 multi-point games.

The CBJ have to be salivating at the chance to start grooming Mateychuk and possibly make him the cornerstone of this franchise alongside Adam Fantilli.

Mateychuk is the first player from Moose Jaw to win the award. Some names that have won the award in the past are Mathew Barzal, Leon Draisaitl, Shea Weber, and Gilbert Brule.

The Moose Jaw Warriors just swept the Portland Winterhawks, and will now move on to the Memorial Cup. The teams competing in this year's Memorial Cup will be the London Knights (OHL), Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL), Drummondville Voltigeurs (QMJHL), and Saginaw Spirit, who will host.
