Broncos’ Drew Sanders Faces Major Setback With Injury Before Season Starts

Denver Broncos’ linebacker Drew Sanders is set to miss a considerable chunk of the 2024 season due to a torn Achilles tendon, as per a report from Mike Klis of 9NEWS. The injury reportedly took place before the NFL Draft in April, throwing a wrench into Sanders’ plans for a breakout second season.

Sanders, who was a third-round pick in the 2023 Draft, had participated in every game during his rookie year, contributing 13 solo tackles and recovering a fumble in his 555 snaps of play, which included time spent on special teams. Despite being primarily a backup in various defensive spots, including EDGE and linebacker positions, Sanders was looking to solidify his role as an outside linebacker under the guidance of coordinator Vance Joseph for his second year with the Broncos.

General Manager George Paton, earlier in February, had hinted at Sanders’ versatility as both a blessing and a challenge, comparing him to Baron Browning in terms of flexibility between positions but also the difficulty in finding a permanent spot. Paton expressed optimism about Sanders’ development, especially after focusing on the outside linebacker position, indicating the team had high hopes for his performance in the upcoming season.

The unfortunate timing of Sanders’ injury, occurring early in the Broncos’ offseason program and before the NFL Draft, led to surgery. While successful, the procedure leaves Sanders’ exact return date uncertain, though comparisons with similar injuries in other players suggest a potential comeback later in the season.

As Sanders faces a long road to recovery, the Broncos and their fans will undoubtedly miss his presence on the field and eagerly await updates on his rehabilitation progress.
