FIFTH-year students from St Aloysius College in Carrigtwohill have designed a filter for chimneys to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Aobh Mohally and Ellen O’Callaghan designed a mesh filter made up of minerals abundantly available in Ireland, which they tested to see if they could help in reducing carbon emissions.
The initial testing saw the carbon dioxide in the smoke reduced by approximately 60-90%.
They represented the school in the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition and following this were invited to participate in the ECO-UNESCO environmental competition, which aims to encourage students to research and promote sustainability and find new ways to reduce the effects of climate change.
They secured a spot in the final, which is taking place on Wednesday in the Dublin Royal Convention Centre.
The pupils have recently secured funding from ePower, Little Island, to continue with the project and attempt to better the results.
