A cancer diagnosis while devastating, can sometimes help you see life in a new perspective and helps you distinguish who are your true well-wishers and who are fairweather friends. In a recent interview, Bollywood diva Manisha Koirala reflected on her journey of surviving cancer and how the difficult diagnosis and her battle with terminal illness made her confront some rather uncomfortable truths.

In a candid chat with NDTV, the ‘Heeramandi’ star said, “It’s been a journey. It has also been a learning experience. I really believed that I had multiple friends. I thought partying together, travelling together, having fun together, people will sit with me in my pain. That was not so. People are not capable of sitting with anybody’s pain, let alone their own pain. We always try to find excuses to not feel pain. We want to escape pain. That’s human nature. I found myself very lonely, and I realised that only my immediate family was around me,” she revealed.

The ‘Akele Hum, Akele Tum’ actress revealed that although her community - the Koirala clan was huge and influential in Nepal, almost nobody came to her aide, and the only people who offered unconditional support was her parents, her brother and his family. “ I realised that when everybody leaves me, these are the people who will be with me. My priority is my immediate family, no matter what. They come first in my life, everybody else later..” she revealed.

Koirala was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012, and underwent treatment in New York.

Koirala made her acting comeback in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial ‘Heeramandi’ this year. The movie marked her reunion with the auteur, 28 years after their first movie ‘Khamoshi: The Musical’. ‘Heeramandi’ also marked the director’s debut on OTT.

Set against the backdrop of British Raj, the magnum opus delves deep into the lives of a coterie of courtesans who inhabit Heeramandi, one of the most prominent red light districts of Lahore. Koirala’s performance as Mallika Jaan, the intimidating and charismatic madame of a bordello, won rave reviews.
