ROCKFORD, Ill. — A man is behind bars after pleading guilty to multiple charges in a case that left one man dead and another person severely injured during a vehicle crash in 2021.

Winnebago County State's Attorney J. Hanley announced today that 30-year-old Devonte M. Flint pled guilty to Aggravated Driving Under the Influence Involving Death and Aggravated Reckless Driving.

On April 25, 2021, Rockford Police officers attempted to pull over a vehicle, driven by Flint, that was suspected of being involved in a crash that occurred at the intersection of 9th Street and Harrison Avenue.

Intersection at 9th Street and Harrison Avenue, Rockford, Ill.

Flint was observed driving northbound on 9th Street where he went through a red light, crashing into a truck. The truck's driver, Raymond Jackson, was transported to a Rockford hospital where he later died from his injuries. An unidentified juvenile female passenger also suffered severe injuries.

Judge Brendan Maher sentenced Flint to the maximum 14 years in the Department of Corrections for the Aggravated Driving Under the Influence Involving Death charge and three years for the charge of Aggravated Reckless Driving. He will also be placed on Mandatory Supervised Release for two years following his release from prison.

Flint's other charges include:

  • Two counts of Delivery of a Controlled Substance, a Class 2 Felony. Flint received two 6-year terms followed by one year of Mandatory Supervised Release.
  • Possession of a Stolen Firearm, a Class 2 Felony. Flint was sentenced to six years followed by one year of Mandatory Supervised Release.

Those charges resulted from a 2018 Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputies narcotics investigation where deputies observed Flint selling narcotics to various individuals on two separate occasions.

All of Flint's sentences must be served at 50% and will run concurrent with one another.

The crash investigation was handled by the Winnebago County Integrity Task Force and the drug investigations were conducted by the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department. Assistant State's Attorney Taylor Nesbit represented the prosecution.
