RCB vs CSK IPL highlights: Royal Challengers Bengaluru qualify for playoffs; Chennai Super Kings knocked out

CSK vs RCB Today IPL Match highlights, IPL 2024: Royal Challengers Bengaluru continued their fairytale run to grab the fourth and final play-off berth with a 27-run victory over defending champions Chennai Super Kings in their must-win last IPL league game on Saturday.

It was the sixth straight win for RCB, who first posted a solid 218 for five after being invited to bat and then restricted CSK to 191 for 7 to make it to the play-offs for the ninth time in 15 seasons.

RCB survived a scare as Ravindra Jadeja (42 not out) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (25) had conjured up hopes of a turnaround after Rachin Ravindra's 61 but Yash Dayal held his nerves in the final over to take the hosts home.

Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad have already qualified for the play-offs.

While it was ecstasy for RCB, the legion of fans of Dhoni sank into despair as it could potentially be the last time they witnessed their 'Thala' perform on a cricket field.

Down and out after losing seven out of their first eight games, RCB had weaved five wins on the trot to script a remarkable turnaround and give themselves a chance to make it to the final four.

On Saturday, the hosts needed to win by at least 18 runs to book the final play-off berth and they did that in style with yet another impressive show at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The two teams finished at 14 points but RCB sneaked into the final four on the basis of a better net run-rate.

The equation was in favour of CSK when they began their run-chase as a 200-plus score would have sealed their place in the final four at the expense of RCB even if they had lost the game.

However, CSK lost skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) and Daryl Mitchell (4) to be reduced to 19 for 2 in the third over.

Ajinkya Rahane (33) and Ravindra (61) steadied the innings with a 64-run stand but Lockie Ferguson broke the partnership as the former was holed out by du Plessis and then the New Zealander was run out.

Du Plessis then took a screamer to remove Mitchell Santner as CSK slipped to 129 for 6 in 15 overs.

With their backs to the wall, Jadeja and Dhoni added a whirlwind 61 off 27 balls to bring the equation down to 11 off five balls to qualify for the play-offs.

With CSK needing 17 runs off the last six balls to qualify, Yash Dayal bowled the final over and he was straight away smashed for a six by Dhoni but the pacer came back strongly to dismiss the former CSK skipper and then conceded just one run in next five balls to seal it for RCB.

Earlier, sent in to bat, RCB's top-order, led by skipper du Plessis, fired in unison.

Du Plessis hit three fours and three sixes on his way to a 39-ball 54, his fourth fifty of the season, while Virat Kohli (47 off 29 balls), Rajat Patidar (41 off 23 balls) and Cameron Green (38 not out off 17 balls) also went on a six-hitting spree to put RCB on solid ground.

Openers Kohli and du Plessis began on a positive note and were 31 for no loss when there was a short rain interruption, causing a 40-minute delay.

However, on resumption, CSK pressed spinners into the attack. With the ball gripping and turning, spin duo of Maheesh Theekshana (25/0) and Mitchell Santner (23/0) troubled the batters as RCB reached 42 for no loss at the end of the Powerplay.

Kohli brought out his slog sweep to clobber two more sixes before holing out to Daryl Mitchell off Santner as RCB slipped to 78 for one in 10 overs.

Ravindra Jadeja (40/0 in 3 overs) was however slaughtered by du Plessis, who blasted a four and two sixes to pile up 20 runs off his third over and then completed his 35-ball fifty.

Rajat Patidar (41) then got into the act, depositing Theekshana for a maximum.

In the 13th over, du Plessis was unfortunately run out at the bowler's end but Patidar continued his onslaught, smashing Simarjeet Singh for a four and a six, while Thakur conceded 17 with Green thumping one over long-on to bring up the 150.

Green was, however, dropped by Gaikwad in the deep but Patidar continued to put the bowler under pressure as he smoked Deshpande for two sixes.

Green then picked up successive sixes off Thakur, who had Patidar caught at the other end but it was too late as cameos from Dinesh Kartik (14) and Glenn Maxwell (16) swelled the total.

I wanted to give the Man of the Match to Yash Dayal. The way he bowled was unbelievable. For a man who's fairly new, he deserves it. [on what he told Dayal before the last over] Pace off is the best option and trust your skills and enjoy, this is what you trained for. The yorker did not work the 1st ball and he went back to pace off and it worked unbelievably well. [on the crowd tonight[ It's crazy, even when we weren't winning the fans were here. We felt in the changeroom we felt it was something we had to get right. Coming here tonight, it was set up nicely, CSK v RCB, unbelievable atmosphere and we as a team will do a lap of honour to thank the crowd for the support. It's really important that we enjoy this, great 6 games in a row and the first goal is to get into the knockouts, enjoy this but get back to work tomorrow.

Faf Du Plessis, RCB skipper

What a night. Unbelievable and such a great atmosphere, such a pleasure to finish off the season with a win. Batting first, I think it was the hardest pitch I have ever played on. Myself and Virat were talking about 140-150 after we came back from the rain break. The communication from the umpires was there was a lot of rain on the pitch, they wanted to push the game and that makes sense. and when we came back my god, I was telling Mitch Santner it was like a day 5 pitch at ranchi and to get 200 on that was unbelievable. The last 6 games the batters have batted with good intent and good strike-rate. We were slow earlier on and we wanted more intent and that was awesome. We were defending 175, it got a bit close, at one stage, with MS there, I thought, oh dear, he has done it so many times. The way we bowleed with the wet ball, we tried to change it.

RCB vs CSK Live: STAT ATTACK

RCB last reached the Playoffs with the Chinnaswamy Stadium as their home base in IPL 2016. Similar to this season, they bounced back from a 2-5 standing at the halfway mark to win six of the last seven league games.

00:29 (IST) May 19

I think it was a good wicket to be honest, it was spinning and gripping a little bit, but I think 200 on this ground was gettable. We kept losing wickets at regular intervals, it was a matter of one or two hits, sometimes that can happen in a T20 game. Pretty happy with what the target was, to sum up the season, I am pretty happy to have seven wins out of 14 games. Just couldn't get over the line in the last two balls. With the kind of injuries we had, missing out on two frontline bowlers, not having Conway at the top of the order as well, I think missing out on three key players made a huge difference. Credit to the CSK staff and everyone who put up a great show for us throughout the season. There were many challenges for us right throughout the first game. Injury to Fizz (Mustafiur), then injruy to Pathirana as well, he came back and then again Pathirana missed out. When you have injuries around, you have to get that balance in the team and pick it (the team) for every game. I think this season sums up well where we had to tinker around with our playing XI, considering the injuries and all the illness (of the players) as well. Happy with the seven wins, couldn't get over the line though. Happy with it. We got 10 from the last 2 balls in our last knockout game last year so this was a similar situation, things didn't go our way (this season) though. For me, personal milestones don't really matter a lot, after all the ultimate goal is to win. If you are not getting there it's a disappointment. Doesn't matter if you score 100 runs or 500-600 runs in a season. I am disappointed.

Ruturaj Gaikwad

00:29 (IST) May 19

Unbelievable, not sure how to put in words, complete team effort, wasn't easy to bowl at the end, it was very wet. Yash, to get rid of MS and get the job done, it was amazing. It's the nature of bowling here, mix it up and keep the batters guessing. There's a bit of spin as well and we needed to keep the batters guessing. In the end, we got the job done. If I could rewind time (on asking why he didn't bowl a yorker in the 19th over), but the wicket was doing a bit when bowled on a length. We know how good Jaddu is with the yorker ball, but perhaps we could have tried to. Thankful to Yash for getting the job done.

RCB vs CSK Live: RCB in playoffs

A remarkable Indian T20 League encounter unfolds as RCB, defying all odds, achieve the seemingly impossible by surpassing CSK to secure a spot in the playoffs. Despite the looming threat of rain, and even experiencing a passing shower, RCB needed to secure a victory margin of at least 18 runs.

However, they surpass expectations by winning by 27 runs. This remarkable feat is attributed to their string of six miraculous consecutive wins, ultimately securing them the fourth and final playoffs berth.

While RCB celebrate, spare a thought for CSK, who staged a roaring comeback in the latter stages.

The duo of Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni almost snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. However, fate had other plans, and the reigning champions bid farewell to the competition.

WICKET! Big big wicket for RCB at the moment. A huge mix up. Yes.No.Yes.No. And Rachin falls for 61 runs. That's the last thing CSK wanted after Shivam Dube got a lifeline, and now they lose the set batsman instead. Glenn Maxwell delivers it a bit fuller, angling it into the legs.

Rachin Ravindra flicks it just behind square leg, and the batters eye a second run. Mahipal Lomror in the deep reaches the ball and fires a throw to the keeper's end. Dinesh Karthik swiftly whips off the bails as Ravindra is caught out of position.

23:18 (IST) May 18

RCB vs CSK Live: DROPPED!

DROPPED! The ball soared high into the night sky, but Mohammed Siraj couldn't hold onto the catch, potentially a pivotal moment in the chase. For sure, the wicket was quite tough, when you bowl into the wicket, there was some bounce, I hope it stays the same in the second innings. Pretty crazy (on conditions changing after the rain break), Faf and Virat batted beautifully (against spin), gave us a nice little platform, they assessed the conditions well. Don't know why it happened, but it was the same in Dharamsala as well. You can't put a figure on that, it's been the beauty of this season's IPL, it's not about keeping any score in mind, just have to get going and play your shots right from the start.
