DUNKIRK Banner placement can’t be a debacle

Summer’s unofficial start in Dunkirk could be a bit sour for some on Memorial Day. Hopes for Hero Banners to be in place before the city services and parade did not look good before Tuesday’s Common Council meeting.

Councilwoman Natalie Luczkowiak, who headed up the effort that has led to the 222 banners — with 98 added this year, was attempting to make a final push to get the items attached to poles in time for the important holiday. She did admit she was frustrated.

Before the council meeting, officials had apparently promised the banners would be up before July 4. For veterans and their families, that’s not soon enough.

Years ago in Fredonia, the village did not place U.S. flags downtown for the Memorial Day holiday. That did not go over well with residents and visitors then.

This could be a bit of history repeating itself — in Dunkirk.
