What is Wicked about?

Think you know the story of The Wizard of Oz? Think again! Novelist Gregory Maguire’s clever spin on the age-old tale gives us a new point of view, as the so-called Wicked Witch, the green-skinned Elphaba, is placed centre stage in Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s world-conquering musical.

At her magical school, Elphaba and the popular blonde witch Glinda initially hate one another, then become unlikely friends. But that bond is tested when they fall for the same boy, Fiyero, and again as they discover the shocking truth behind the dictatorial Wizard and his plans for the inhabitants of Oz.

Filled with stirring songs such as “Defying Gravity”, plus stylish design and epic special effects, it’s no wonder Wicked is an enduring West End favourite – and soon to become a major two-part Hollywood movie.

The cast

Wicked is all about girl power, and that’s definitely true of its first ever Elphaba and Glinda: Idina Menzel (who later voiced Elsa in Frozen) and Kristin Chenoweth. The upcoming Hollywood film features an all-star cast led by Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and Jonathan Bailey.

Currently defying gravity in the West End production are Alexia Khadime (The Prince of Egypt) as Elphaba and Lucy St Louis (The Phantom of the Opera) as Glinda. They’re joined by Ryan Reid (Dreamgirls), Sophie-Louise Dann (Bend It Like Beckham), and Michael Fenton Stevens (Yes, Prime Minister).

The show features a stirring score by three-time Oscar-winner Stephen Schwartz (Pocahontas, The Prince of Egypt), direction by Joe Mantello (Tony winner for Take Me Out and Assassins), and Tony-winning designs by Eugene Lee and Susan Hilferty. It’s a wickedly entertaining show that balances proper spectacle with heartfelt drama.
