There have been hot and cold reports about the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise over the past few years. Some had a reboot happening with an entirely new cast, others a female-centric film with Margot Robbie. Now, Jerry Bruckheimer is setting the record straight.
"It's two different movies," Bruckheimer says. The reboot has Jeff Nathanson doing the script with the Robbie-centric film being written by Christina Hodson, according to Entertainment Weekly, which caught up with the producer. "We hope to get 'em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too."
The Last of Us creator Craig Mazin worked on a story for the sreboot with original screenwriter Ted Elliot. Mazin told the L.A. Times that their script was very weird and that Disney seemed to like it. But the project stalled because of the strikes last year.

Now, it seems, Nathanson is working on the script, and Bruckheimer likes what he sees, at least the ending.

"I think he's cracked it," said the producer. "He's got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second and then we'll get there. But he wrote a great, great third act."
As for the Robbie project, the actress told Vanity Fair in 2022, "We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would've been really cool, but I guess they don't want to do it."

Not so, says Bruckheimer, though he did not provide the same level of detail for the spinoff starring the Barbie actress.
As for the involvement of the franchise's biggest name in the reboot, Bruckheimer indicated that film would feature new actors. He did not close the door on the idea.

"It's a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it," said the producer of Johnny Depp. "I love him. He's a good friend. He's an amazing artist and he's a unique look. He created Captain Jack."

Maybe this would be a good time to go for soft reboot, maybe end the plot of the last saga and make way for a new cast.

Is Margot Robbie's production company involved in her thing? I was super impressed reading/listening to all the BTS stuff she did on Barbie. They need to just throw whatever money she wants her way and let her team cook.

As for the other on, an actual reboot feels kinda silly since we're gonna be at peak nostalgia for the originals soon. Just tell a different story in the universe so they can still eat with a Will/Elizabeth movie down the line for 2000s nostalgia.

Need to have one actually be about the animatronics for the ride coming to life and rampaging throughout Disney World

I actually watched the 4th one a few days ago for the first time and enjoyed it a lot - the schtick had run thin by the 2010s but I feel like nothing has really emerged to fill that same action-adventure space. I guess superhero movies but, eh, not scratching the same itch.

So even if they're mid I'm open to them revisiting the series.

Eh, I didn't even bother with the last one a few minutes in. Elizabeth Swan was a pretty prominent character in the movies she's in and they had some nice ideas for her (e.g. the ghost bit), so I don't see a reason why there couldn't be a movie with a female lead. Who can act.

But

I'm not sure I need another Pirates movie.

Make a Master and Commander movie with complete gender swap instead. Margot Robbie the gruff but lovable Jacky Aubrey and Dr. Harl...Ivy...Isley...Maturin, her redhead BFF.

I love Master and Commander.

you know what, butler could definitely pull it off
Butler could definitely pull off that Calico Jack-type of eccentric pirate that Jack Sparrow was.

However, this is one of those cases where they can see the iceberg ahead, but still are trudging forward anyway. Depp was the face of the series, and removing him will take away the draw and appeal for a lot of people especially after the trial brought him back in massive favor with the public.

seems needlessly complicated. how about just one movie, a reboot with margot robbie?
My guess is they're pursuing both, so that when one falls through they've got a backup already in progress.

If whichever one makes it to market flops, the other is quietly cancelled.

Pirates is a HUGE franchise for Disney internationally, and I imagine they really want to get it back in style now that Marvel & Star Wars seem to be fading slightly.

Where's Gore Verbinski?

Asking the real questions

As always, whenever PotC discussions come about, I feel obligated to point to this article about Verbinski. It's an excellent read as to why he made the original trilogy work so well, and I fear no sequel -- past and future -- will ever reach those same lofty heights of greatness again without his involvement.

‘Pirates of the Caribbean’: What’s Really Missing from ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales’

The franchise has never recovered from the departure of director Gore Verbinski.
And that marked superiority really has to do with one, key ingredient: Gore Verbinski. The director behind the first three Pirate films not only succeeded in ways that those responsible for On Stranger Tides (2011) and Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) could not, he also outdid many modern blockbuster helmers in a variety of areas.

What then elevates Verbinski's Pirates films are their immaculate realities, memorable action sequences and dynamic emotional journeys. "Immaculate Reality" was a cinematic term primarily used by Akira Kurosawa and later George Lucas to describe the worlds that they fabricated within their films. No matter how far removed in time or location, they ensured that their audience would accept those places as real through the depth, breath, detail and cohesion of their production design, costumes, locations, sound effects and music. Each of the Pirates locations overflow with production design detail and cinematic atmosphere that suck the viewer into them and communicate their grit and filth as well as their beauty and romance. Every corner of these films feel real, lived in and one of a kind.

Finally, Verbinski knows what this franchise is based upon — a theme park ride — and consequently ensures that the emotional journeys of each of his Pirates films are as varied and dynamic as a rollercoaster. The slow upward climb of an exposition scene is followed by the exciting downward plunge of a rousing action sequence. And the lightness and fun of certain characters is balanced with the intensity and drama of others. The director is crafting fun, popcorn flicks, yes, but also films about pirates — greedy and murderous criminals.

In the end, all of the Pirates sequels fall short of greatness, each of their plots more tangled than the Kraken's tentacles. Even so, Verbinski entries do escape the doldrums of mediocrity and blandness because of that filmmaker's cinematic eye, wonderfully bizarre style and "rollercoaster-ride storytelling."

Stranger Tides is largely a middling movie but it has one of my favorite representations of mermaids in anything. That first scene where one suddenly shows up on the side of the rowboat could have been from a horror movie.

It's a crime how Ian McShane was wasted though.

I mean all you gotta do is make Pirates 6, and let Depp be a leading character but not the central one to the main plot, like he was in the originals.

I'm told I should audition for this. I may be JD's doppelganger but I'm no match for Austin Butler

I do however want to see William Turner be the full on main villain take on Davy Jones though

i think they messed up making the franchise so Jack Sparrow/Depp centric. like for 3 movies that's fine but they just kept rolling along with it

see where things go though

They kept rolling it along into two more films that were successful. That's not really a compelling argument for what you're saying.

i mean, forward thinking, as a franchise, was it a good idea?

depp starring in pirates 6 is (as far as my understanding) off the table so that's for a reason

Can these be based on more real things? Our Flag Means Death made me realized I want that. Actual pirates, Black Bart Roberts, Sam Bellamy, Charles Vane, Stede Bonnet, Bonney and Read... Few fictional ones to support them, including the new MC.
There's rumors Disney want Austin Butler for the reboot.
Not gonna lie, Austin would make an amazing Stede Bonnet, the gentleman pirate. Young, handsome, blonde, kinda pirate that make ladies give up their jewelry willingly.

Yes. Your solution would've been a reboot when Depp was a selling proposition. You have no idea whether your idea wouldve been successful. We do know two more Depp Pirates movies would be cause they were.

The first 3 Pirates are my favorite movie trilogy ever. But honestly, just let it be. You can't bring Johnny back, but people aren't going to show up without him.

The only thing that could MAYBE make me interested is if they could get Gore Verbinski back. He was the true secret sauce of the originals.

First if you liked the movie go immediately and watch Black Sails (its on Netflix), its absolutely fantastic 4 season pirates show. Then you'll want to play Assassins Creed Black Flag, which will make you want to rewatch Black Sails. An infinite loop of greatness.

The success of the first movie was because of the absolute charm of Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow and a fantastic villain in Rush as Barbossa. Depp had a drunk rogue over-his-head pirate shtick down pat, and Barbossa really gave off that "i'm so fucking tired of hanging out with these pirate morons for so long, I just want to eat an apple and die".

There are probably a million ways you can go with a reboot, you could try black sails and be a prequel to Treasure Island. You could go for uncharted 4 and deal with Henry Avery and the Mughal treasure ship - both are linked heavily to the caribbean so it sticks with the themes. I'd personally like to see something Atlantis or Bermuda themed, not sure how much a horror vs comedy mix would work but something supernatural dealing with the Bermuda Triangle could be cool. There are lots and lots of fun ideas set in the 1600s and 1700s around pirates, and its a shame more movies and shows don't delve into it.

Not interested at all in romance or leaning too hard into real life pirates (most of them only were pirates for 2 years lol), I'd want it light, action oriented, and just fun.

I just can't see a new mainline Pirates movie being successful without Depp. He is the face of the franchise.
Yeah, the average person probably won't care if he's not in it. The original trilogy holds up a ton, so it's not like a reboot is needed anyway.

Just make it the Secret of Monkey Island movie it was meant to be before they stole the idea wholesale.

Those are two reboots though? You can't call the Margot Robbie project a spinoff if she's playing a new character unrelated to the other movies.

I raise you this wonderful watch (if you have the time):

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtEYWMuw5c8

I've always enjoyed 2 and 3 more than others. Having recently rewatched them, I like 2 and 3 even more now. As the video mentions, the tangled web of plots that makes 2 pretty heavy is less of a burden in a post-MCU world, I think. So my conclusion has shifted to that it's not that 1 was lightning in a bottle, it's that the one key ingredient that made the trilogy work was Verbinski. The wheel fight has not yet been matched.
