Everything You Need to Know About the ‘Yellowstone’ Franchise

‘Yellowstone’ is the series that began it all, but here’s more about its multiple upcoming spinoff series. 'Yellowstone' stars Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, and Wes Bentley.

The Series Where Every Spinoff is Made with Numbers

Yellowstone is the series that started the whole franchise. The Paramount Network series started in 2018 and will be releasing its fifth and final season in November 2024. The exact premiere date of the final season has yet to be announced.

The Show that Started it all ‘Yellowstone’

The cattle ranch drama follows the story of the Dutton family and their modern-day cattle ranch empire in the state of Montana called Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Throughout the series, the family has to fight land developers, criminals, and arguments with the preservation of Yellowstone National Park as they struggle to see what the future of their ranch will be. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and his children, Jamie (Wes Bentley), Beth (Kelly Reilly), and Kayce (Luke Grimes), also fight over the future of the farm.

As each season passed, the ratings and audience continued to rise. The first part of Season 5 broke ratings records. The Hollywood Reporter reported that the season earned the biggest overnight launch for the series. The decision to end the series with Season 5 was made after production was delayed due to Costner’s filming schedule with other productions. It has not been announced how Costner will be involved in the final episodes. Unlike the prequel series, the licensing deal with NBCUniversal predated the Viacom-CBS merger, which has Yellowstone only being available to watch on streaming platform Peacock. The first half of Season 5 is available to stream on Peacock on May 25. While CBS is airing the complete series on Sunday nights during the wait for the final episodes.

What Happened in the Year ‘1883?’

1883 was the first Yellowstone prequel series to be released in December 2021. Launched first on Paramount+, then a series run on Paramount Network in summer 2021. The story takes place before the Dutton family founded their ranch in Montana. It tells the Dutton family origin story as it follows the early generations of the family as they travel from Fort Worth, Texas, to Montana, where they later find land, as shown in the original series. The family faces trials and tribulations throughout its ten-episode run. The cast consists of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as James and Margaret Dutton. They were joined by Sam Elliot and Eric Nelsen. Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, Audie Rick, Emma Malouff, Dawn Olivieri, Marc Rissmann, Anna Fiamora, James Landry Herbert, Alex Fine, Gratiela Brancusi, Nichole Galicia, Stephanie Nur, Amanda Jaros, Noah Le Gros, Martin Sensmeier, and a special cameo from Tom Hanks.

And, ‘1923’?

Premiering on December 8, 2022, was the second spinoff series titled 1923, which had changed its name from 1932.

The change of name allows for the story to show the fallout of World War I and the beginning of the Great Depression. It premiered simultaneously on Paramount Network and Paramount+. 1923 stars Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton and Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton, along with Marley Shelton, Jennifer Ehle, Sebastian Roche, and Darren Mann. This series picked up decades after the end of 1883 to expand more into the earlier generation of Duttons as they struggled to keep the ranch from going under. As the season ended on a cliffhanger, Paramount decided to renew it for a second season, but nothing has been announced about the production or premiere date.

Now it’s ‘1944’

As the original series Yellowstone comes to a close in 2024, Paramount has announced that a new prequel series is in the works. Details of the storyline and the casting have yet to be announced, but the working title, 1944, seems to suggest that the series will take place during the era of WWII. The timeline could potentially involve the solution to the most asked question of the franchise: who is John Dutton’s father? As the prequel was first teased in 2022, it was reported by Deadline that the 1960s could also be a time that is explored by theYellowstone Franchise.

Well, ‘2024’ is Just the Working Title

2024 was originally announced as an unnamed sequel to the Yellowstone series, but it is now operating under the working title of 2024. It was supposed to premiere in December 2023 following the November season premiere of Yellowstone but got pushed back as the original show moved to November 2024. Deadline reports that the premiere will most likely be in December 2024. Details about the cast and story of the new series remain a secret. The speculation of Matthew McConaughey starring in the series remains, as well as Michelle Pfeiffer joining the cast as well. But there is no evidence that says these speculations are facts.

‘6666’ is Too Many 6’s

The series 6666 (pronounced “four sixes”), unlike the other numerically named sequels and prequels, is taking a different turn. While the other series take place during a different time period, this series will take place during the present day, like the original series. First announced in February 2021, 6666 does not have a cast or release date announced, much like the other announced series. Speculation has asserted that the series may be indefinitely postponed until after the final series of Yellowstone has finished. But not a single announcement has been made since the green light announcement.
