Summary

  • Falin's fate in Delicious in Dungeon takes a dark turn after being revived by forbidden dark magic.
  • The haunting fanart of Falin's new chimera form and highlights her drastic transformation with fierce details.
  • The art captures the tension and battle against Falin as she fights against her brother and saviors.

Falin Touden's fate in Delicious in Dungeon is harrowing for fans of the series to watch after spending the entirety of the first cour of the anime rooting for Laios and company to save her. Originally being eaten by an extremely powerful Red Dragon, she's rescued and revived through Marcille's use of black magic. Though something horrible had happened during the resurrection process. Falin's soul had been combined with that of the dragon, causing her to be corrupted into a monstrous chimera by the dark magician who had created the dungeon.

Brainwashed and forced to fight against her brother and her friends, Falin's new appearance has been illustrated in a beautiful, yet haunting way by artist koifish_kk on X (formerly Twitter).

The fanart shows that the mage's kind eyes have become tainted by draconic rage as she glowers towards the viewer, body now coated in feathery down and her wide wings spread intimidatingly.

In her new form, Falin's now boundless strength and violent tendencies are a far cry from her usual demeanor. Part of what makes this fanart so effective is how the artist chose to highlight this change. Falin's usual pleasant smile is nowhere to be seen, replaced with a snarl showing her now pointed teeth. As mentioned, her eyes portray a sort of rage that is extremely unusual to see from the mage, considering the character is typically seen with her eyes closed – bar a few major moments in the series. It truly highlights that Falin has fundamentally changed from the gentle soul she once was.

Still, it is very recognizably the mage, even if she is a giant bird-dragon from the waist down. The wings on Falin's back, combined with her usual cherubic look, make her almost seem angelic. Her feathers are lavishly rendered and shaded, and the gold lighting shades her in a mysterious, otherworldly way. The artist has done an excellent job capturing the chimera Falin's haunting and powerful presence.

The Battle against the Chimera Falin

Laios, and the rest of their friends, are now forced to battle Falin after journeying to rescue her

Another detail of the art is Falin clasping her other eye, as blood drips down her face. It's likely meant to reference it being gouged out during her conflict with the combined forces of Laios's and Shuro's parties in episode #17, "Harpy/Chimera". It helps sell the tension being set up in the art, the conflict unfolding around her, the reason why she is so enraged in the first place.

While kk's art is far from the only artistic rendition of Falin's new form, it certainly stands out as an excellent rendition of her new appearance. As Delicious in Dungeon season 1 continues towards its big finale, there will certainly be even more art of the much beloved mage, both as a human and in her mutated new form.
