The making of Rocky is going to be chronicled in a scripted movie about the film's production. While it hasn't yet been revealed who will play Sylvester Stallone, the director of the movie has been confirmed.

Per IndieWire, Peter Farrelly (Green Book) is attached to direct I Play Rocky, a new movie about how the 1976 boxing movie came together to find huge success against all odds. The concept could be compared to The Offer, a limited series at Paramount+ that was about the making of The Godfather. Casting is reportedly underway for I Play Rocky, and the film is set to be shopped at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival market. Farrelly will produce with former Warner Bros. boss Toby Emmerich and Christian Baha. Peter Gamble (Office Uprising) is penning the script.

Sylvester Stallone shared an emotional response to the death of Rocky franchise star Carl Weathers.

A statement released by Emmerich noted of the project, “I’ve been a fan of Peter Farrelly as both a filmmaker and a person since getting to work with him on the music for Dumb and Dumber. But it was Green Book that made me think of Pete for this inspiring screenplay. Christian Baha and I feel blessed to have Pete at the helm for this movie. And like the unknown Stallone starring in Rocky, Pete will be conducting a worldwide search to discover another actor who just needs one shot — in I Play Rocky — to show the world what he can do.”

I Play Rocky Aims to Recapture the Fascinating Real-Life Story

“When I first read Peter Gamble’s energetic and poignant script, I knew it captured something very special,” Baha continued. “The story of I Play Rocky is as unique as Sylvester Stallone himself, a seeming Everyman with an undeniable gift who needs to share it with the world and refuses to take ‘no’ for an answer. And like the hero of our film, Baha Productions needed grit and determination as we fought for years to make this project into a reality. We are so fortunate to have teamed up with Toby Emmerich and Peter Farrelly, two legendary talents who not only share but enhance our vision of the film.”

The report makes no mention of Stallone personally having any involvement with the film at this time. An official logline has been divulged, and it notably doesn't refer to Stallone by name. It could be speculated that the film could rewrite history a bit by following a character inspired by Stallone. However, the synopsis does suggest a story that's very reminiscent of what really happened with Stallone's quest to get Rocky made, which includes his insistence that he also gets to star in the lead role.

Per the logline, the film "follows a struggling actor with a partially paralyzed face and a speech impediment who writes a script that a big movie studio wants to buy, but he refuses to sell it unless he gets to play the lead. Turning down an offer of life-changing money, he instead works for pennies to get the movie made with himself in the starring role.”

I Play Rocky doesn't have a release date at this time.
