IPL 2024: SRH qualification scenario explained

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are currently slotted at fourth spot in the IPL 2024 standings.

The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has almost come to the end of the group stage. Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals have already booked a seat in the playoffs stage; only two places are remaining up for grabs. A total of five teams are trying their luck and fighting for the remaining places. After looking at the points table, there are five teams that still have a chance.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and Delhi Capitals (DC) DC have 14 points each, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have 12 points on the board. These teams are still alive, and only two spots remain. It might come down to teams with 14 points also making it through on the basis of the NRR. But among these five teams, only SRH have two more games to play.

How can Sunrisers Hyderabad qualify for IPL 2024 playoffs ?

The 2016 IPL winners finished at the bottom of the table last season. But the franchise brought World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins at the auction and made him their captain, and it changed the equation totally. SRH have set a benchmark when it comes to their batting prowess. They have broken some massive batting records, which is why they are the front-runners for a place in the next round. It will be a surprise if they can’t qualify.

Well, SRH have 14 points on the board with NRR of +0.406 currently. They are sitting fourth on the points table. They have two more games to play, and both matches will be played at home. That will be an advantage for Pat Cummins and co. They will face Gujarat Titans on May 15 and Punjab Kings on May 19. Both, GT and PBKS have had poor seasons, and they performed badly. So that might give SRH more confidence heading into this game.

Let’s suppose they win only one of these two matches and reach 16 points. That will help them reach the playoffs. If they can win both games, they can challenge Rajasthan Royals for second place. But if they lose their two remaining games, they need to make sure that those are close wins, so that with 14 points and a better NRR, they can make it through the playoffs. But the way they are performing, it will be a shock if they can’t make it to the next round.
