“Thelma” Looks Surprisingly Fun

Every now and them, amidst the wave of CGI spectacles or preachy message machines disguised as movies, a simple cool film slips into the mix with little hype and promotions.

Recently, I watched the trailer for a movie that has been circulating film fests since January, Thelma. Not to be mistaken with the tedious art film of the same name from 2017, or with Thelma and Louise, director Josh Margolin puts the “cool girl and friend get revenge” story into a whole new light.

Thelma Post is a loving 93-year-old grandma who is duped out of several thousand dollars in a phone scam, a real issue that preys on elderly. When the cops are unable to help her, she gathers her friend Ben and they head out to take revenge for the wrongdoings…and it looks delightful.

The main thing that caught my eye was the cast June Squibb in the title role is also in her 90s and still going strong, but we sadly lost the awesome Richard Roundtree last year at age 81. Roundtree, of course, was John Shaft in the always butt-kicking Shaft films. He went on to appear in a ton of other films. I’m hoping this film will be a wonderful tribute to a lifelong badass with heart. There are some other good casting choices including Clark Gregg and Parker Posey, but this movie belongs to the “old folks”, and I hope they save the day.

I usually don’t pay attention to critic reviews, but this does look like Squibb and Roundtree are going to deliver something both heartfelt and hilarious. Let’s hope it does, and gives us a pleasant and cool reason to laugh a little this summer.

Thelma is rated PG-13, and comes out for theatrical release on June 21.
