MC Lyte sets the rap game abuzz with news of a new album; the first in nearly a decade.
The legendary rapper recently appeared on Rock The Bells Radio’s That’s The Joint, when she unveiled exciting details about her forthcoming project — the follow-up to her 2015 release, Legend. “I got a new record. I’m working on it right now,” she said. Adding, “The new single is out. It’s ‘Woman.’ The new record is coming.”
“WOMAN” finds MC Lyte teaming up with Salt of Salt-N-Pepa, Big Daddy Kane, and Raheem Devaughn for the ultimate girl power anthem.
“I ain’t ever wanted nothing but some respect/ And see the love from his eyes be reflected/ Never looking for a handout or a check/ Just a humble spirit looking for a connection/ Love from the depths of my soul I am given/ loyal to the death with a heart made to listen/ Open to give and receive be the air that you breathe, help you move into a King’s position,” she spits on the opener.
While keeping mum about the details, MC Lyte did spill that “The album comes out August 9 and the next single comes out June 9.”
Discussing the inspiration behind her highly anticipated comeback, the “Paper Thin” lyricist disclosed that fellow Hip Hop heavyweights Nas and LL COOL J were instrumental in her resurgence. “He said, ‘But what about you? Stop being scared, put out some music,’” she shared, reflected on a conversation she had with LL.
“And then of course, Nas, he gives a call out to all people of the late ’80s, early ’90s. I slipped in at the end of the ’80s, but a lot of my success came from the ’90s. So he’s just like, ‘Where y’all at? Drop some music,’” she added.
The Brooklyn native, who started rhyming as a teenager, blazed trails through a series of groundbreaking achievements. In 1988, she became Hip Hop’s first female artist to drop a solo album with Lyte As A Rock. She also made history as the first rap artist to grace New York’s Carnegie Hall stage and as the first female rapper to earn a Gold single.
Additionally, she garnered recognition as the first solo female rapper nominated for a Grammy in 1994, for her hit single “Ruffneck,” among other notable accomplishments.
If her past achievements are any indication of what’s to come, we can certainly anticipate something great on her next release.
