The quality of life for pensioners in Spain means there is 'not a cat in hell’s chance' retired police officer Richard Hill would move back to the UK

The quality of life for pensioners in Spain means there is 'not a cat in hell’s chance' retired police officer Richard Hill would move back to the UKTwenty-five years ago, retired police officer Richard Hill saved money by selling his three-bedroom terraced house in Portsmouth and buying a similar sized house in Alicante, Spain – with 5,000 sq metres of sprawling land.

The couple said they are “absolutely” able to eat out more in Spain, compared to pensioners in the UK, with a three- or four-course meal and glass of wine costing between £7 and £10. “And the food is generally fantastic.”While a weekly supermarket shop in Alicante may cost about the same as in Portsmouth, Mr Hill said, “The quality of the fish, fruit and veg is amazing, better than the UK”.

He also said pensioners’ lifestyles in Spain are made all the better by the people and their culture. “The best way I can describe it is ‘manaña’ – tomorrow will do,” he said. “They work to live here, not live to work. It is laid back, tranquil.”Even if he and his wife miss Marmite and English tea, Mr Hill said “there is not a cat in hell’s chance we’d move back” to the UK. “Maybe if someone puts me in chains and gives me anaesthetic,” he joked.

His support group still handles the same number of cases now as it did before Brexit, he said. While a newWhen Mr Hill retired he only had to show Spanish authorities he had €3,500 in provable savings. Since the UK left the EU, British pensioners must now have at least €28,800 in their bank account for an entire year, in order to apply for what is called a non-lucrative visa.

To bring over any family members or dependents, an additional €7,200 per person per year must be saved.
