Written and directed by genre legend Leigh Whannell, the writer behind Saw and Insidious, 2020’s The Invisible Man took H.G. Wells’ classic novel of the same name and spun it into a chilling tale of domestic abuse.

After escaping from her violent tech mogul boyfriend Adam (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) at the start of the film, Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss) is still left shaken from her experience. Even when Adam is reportedly found dead soon after, she’s still paranoid that he’s out to get her.

When strange things start happening around the house, those around Cecilia begin to think that she's losing her mind. However, the terrible truth is revealed when she finds Adam’s phone in the attic alongside a knife and some of her missing belongings.

Upon making the unsettling discovery, a text from an unknown number appears on the phone reading “SURPRISE”. Unable to see anyone while peering down from the attic door, she throws a tin of white paint to reveal her assailant wearing a high-tech invisibility suit only inches away from her.

Not only is this one of the best reveals in modern horror, but this scare likewise underscores how much of a threat this invisible attacker is.
