George S. Patton Quote

📚 Storytime! 📚

"The difficulty in understanding the Russian is that we do not take cognizance of the fact that he is not a European, but an Asiatic, and therefore thinks deviously. We can no more understand a Russian than a Chinaman or a Japanese, and from what I have seen of them, I have no particular desire to understand them, except to ascertain how much lead or iron it takes to kill them. In addition to his other Asiatic characteristics, the Russian has no regard for human life and is an all out son of bitch, barbarian, and chronic drunk."

Always love to see people quote Supreme General of God, George Patton. A man who didn't care about how many Americans were dead in the dirt underneath him

Patton was an ass, very much a mad dog needing a leash and a horrible bigot. However, he was a brilliant general who saw winning the war leading to less death.

You can’t be in the business of war if you don’t see the bigger picture which does mean being forced to not become attached to the men fighting

He was Brilliant when he didn't plan the operation. Eisenhower described Patton as "the most brilliant commander of an Army in the open field that our or any other service produced. But his army was part of a whole organization and his operations part of a great campaign" He believed generals like Bradley were far superior at planning operations and Patton was a good executor, General Alan Brooke described Patton as " A dashing, courageous, wild, and unbalanced leader, good for operations requiring thrust and push, but at a loss in any operation requiring skill and judgment."

You can’t be in the business of war if you don’t see the bigger picture which does mean being forced to not become attached to the men fighting

You also shouldn't be in the business if you're just going to throw away your men needlessly. The Lorraine campaign was a Pyrrhic victory, sure the region was captured, but in 3 months they only pushed 50 miles and suffered 50,000 killed, wounded and missing, 1/3 of the 3rd Army's total casualty count for the entire war. And the absolutely disgraceful Task Force Baum which saw 32 Americans Killed in Action, and 256 wounded, missing or captured, 16 tanks, 28 halftracks and 13 support vehicles destroyed and captured, all to get his son in law out of a POW camp, which completely failed, only for the camp to be liberated a week later.

A good commander sure. But there were far better commanders to get the job done most of the time.

Fought all of those battles just to die from pulmonary edema and congestive heart failure from the result of a traffic accident after the war had ended.
