ASIAN AMERICAN HISTORY DISCUSSION: Join the Troy Public Library on May 13 at 6:00 pm for an intimate panel discussion between three Asian American scholars on topics of their research in Asian American studies. We will be joined by Dr. Vivien Ng (Associate Professor Emerita of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at UAlbany) who will discuss the challenges and joys of researching family history in the Capital Region and beyond. Dr. Chingyen Mayer (Associate Professor of English at Siena College) will discuss her approach to studying writings on memoir and homeland, and Dr. Gwen D’Arcangelis (Associate Professor of Gender Studies at Skidmore College) will discuss her oral histories with activists about the role of Chinese medicine in 1960s Asian American activism. We invite the audience into a glimpse of the work in Asian American Studies in the Capital Region! This in-person event is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged, but not required. SAM LOCAL MAGICIANS’ MEETING: The local group of The Society of American Magicians, Assembly #24, meets at 7pm PM on the second Tuesday of the month at the S. W. COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 5 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. LIBRARY TALK: Join the Troy Public Library at 6pm for a talk about “Gardening in Small Spaces.” Master Gardener Chris Ferrero will teach how to create beauty in a small backyard, walkway, or on your deck/patio. Participants will learn how to plan, choose the right plants, and focus on some simple principles (which can enhance larger gardens as well!). This in-person event is free and open to the public. RIDE OF SILENCE: The Albany Bicycle Coalition will hold its annual “Ride of Silence for Bicyclists Killed & Seriously Injured in Crashes” on May 15. This is an event that bicycle groups around the world participate in. At 5 PM on Wednesday May 15, we will gather at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery to remember cyclist Joseph Crandall and the many other victims of traffic violence on Central Avenue, the deadliest road in the Capital Region. Location: 2150 Central Ave, Schenectady. At 6pm we will depart Evergreen for a 15.2 mile bike ride to visit sites where Roger Sawyer and Jeremy Williams lost their lives. The ride stays off Central Avenue, but riders should be comfortable riding with traffic. The ride will return to Evergreen before dark. Rain date May 22nd. SIDEWALK WARRIORS: Each Thursday evening in the parking lot at 35 State St. in Troy, dozens of volunteers set up a large number of tables for Sidewalk Warriors’ weekly distribution. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 pm, no matter what the weather. LIBRARY COMMITTEE MEETING: The Troy Public Library is holding the following meeting: Outreach Committee, 1pm.

KNIT & CROCHET GROUP: Join the Troy Public Library for a bi-weekly stitching group from 10 to 11 am on every first and third Friday of the month. Whether you have experience knitting or crocheting or you want to start learning a new skill, this group is for you! Participants will work together to stitch blankets and other needed items to donate to local homeless shelters and outreach groups. Participants are also welcome to work on their own personal projects. Bring your own knitting needles and crochet hooks or use what we have available. This in-person event is free and open to the public. No registration required. The Troy Public Library is located at 100 Second Street, Troy.

CHICKEN BBQ FUNDRAISER: The Kiwanis Club of Troy is holding their annual Chicken BBQ. It will again be at St. Michael’s Church at 175 Williams Road next to HVCC, on May 17th from 4-6pm. All dinners are freshly barbequed on site, that day, by our friends from Miller’s Backyard BBQ & packaged for take-out. Each dinner includes a half chicken, baked potato, coleslaw and cornbread. WIGGLY WANDERERS: At Moreau Lake State Park, 9:30am. Wiggly Wanderers is a casual and fun program that is offered to walking toddlers, carriable babies and their caregivers. This will be a beginner’s hike/wander series for toddlers who are ready to move and caregivers who are willing and able to baby wear and/or carry their toddler if their legs get too tired. We will not plan too much distance walking and we will rely on teachable moments to carry us through these experiences. Strollers will not work for these programs. While you do not need to attend each week, we will continue to build our toddlers hiking skills as well as their caregivers’ confidence taking the children into the woods to explore. HOOSICK HISTORY AND HERITAGE FAIR: The Hoosick History and Heritage Fair is back for its 2nd year! This popular event, sponsored by the Friends of the Bennington Battlefield and the Hoosick Township Historical Society, will be held on May 18th, from 10 am until 3 pm at the Hoosick Falls Armory on Church St. in Hoosick Falls. The highlight of the Fair is back: the free trolley ride to and from the Bennington Battlefield with guides to answer questions and share our amazing history. The Moose Kaboose food truck will cater a chicken Barbeque lunch in the Wood Memorial Park from 11 am until they are sold out. The meal includes half chicken with sides and homemade and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Tickets can be purchased for $15 each. Proceeds from the barbeque will benefit the Friends of Bennington Battlefield and the Hoosick Township Historical Society.

SNEAKER DRIVE: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church 510 Albany Shaker Road Loudonville will be having a Sneaker Drive Collection on Saturday May 18 from 9 am to 1 pm. We will be accepting athletic sneakers in excellent to fair condition with shoe laces and insoles. No sneakers in poor condition, slip-on-sneakers, shoes, boots or flip flops. WATERFORD CANAL FESTIVAL: May 18th 10am to 6pm. The Waterford Canal Festival features vendors, delicious food, boat rides, and much more. Visitors can take a stroll along the canal, take part in tours, and witness the impressive workings of the locks in operation. Children’s activities, such as face painting and bounce houses, are also available to entertain the little ones.

GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY MEETING: The Capital District Genealogical Society is holding an in-person day of family research at the Guilderland Public Library from 10am to 3pm. Walk-in participants are encouraged to bring their family history questions to be explored by a qualified CDGS guide. Participants are allotted 30 minutes on a first-come, first-served basis. Internet access will be provided by the Guilderland Public Library. This program is open to the public and no preregistration is necessary. There is no fee for this program. OUTDOOR FARMERS MARKET: The Troy Waterfront Farmers Market is held outdoors in the streets Downtown area every Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm from May through October and features over 100 vendors. CAR WASH: The 5th Annual Car Wash to benefit the Stephentown Historical Society is on Sunday May 19th, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the New Scrub Board Laundromat and Car Wash, 15808 NY Route 22, Stephentown. Your ticket of $150 will help the MACCenter continue to bring more gallery openings, great productions, artist workshops and more to the community. ANIMAL MEET & GREET: At Moreau Lake State Park, noon. This program is new and will include a little meet and greet with each animal in the nature center. Afterwards we will work together to guess the weight of each animal and put them in order according to our guesses. We will use some weighted items to help us make guesses and have some fun in the process. This program is ideal for kids 7+ but siblings are welcome to join. FILM DISCUSSION: Saratoga Jewish Community Arts and the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York present a panel discussion of the documentary “Four Seasons Lodge” on May 19 at 7 pm on Zoom. The 2008 film grew out of a series of articles by Andrew Jacobs, a reporter for The New York Times and a novice director who was imaginative enough to enlist the help of the outstanding cinematographer Albert Maysles. While the film is labeled a Holocaust documentary, it is not your typical Shoah story. On the surface, the plot revolves around a group of people who survived the death camps and now are struggling to save their summer camp in the Catskills. “Four Seasons Lodge” is available free to stream on Amazon Prime Video and Kanopy (registration with library card required). FREE CONCERT: Albany Area Senior Orchestra (AASO) cordially invites the public to a free concert at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21 at the Cohoes Senior Center, 10 Cayuga Plaza, Cohoes. The 60-minute concert will feature a variety of music ranging from film and TV music, to ragtime, blues, and hymns. At the center of the program will be “Albany Suite,” a short four-movement work by Vincent Bonafede that is a musical depiction of life in Albany. After the concert, the orchestra will treat the audience to a free ice cream social with ice cream generously donated by Stewart’s Shops.

WIGGLY WANDERERS: At Moreau Lake State Park, 9:30am. Wiggly Wanderers is a casual and fun program that is offered to walking toddlers, carriable babies and their caregivers. This will be a beginner’s hike/wander series for toddlers who are ready to move and caregivers who are willing and able to baby wear and/or carry their toddler if their legs get too tired. We will not plan too much distance walking and we will rely on teachable moments to carry us through these experiences. Strollers will not work for these programs. While you do not need to attend each week, we will continue to build our toddlers hiking skills as well as their caregivers’ confidence taking the children into the woods to explore. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 pm, no matter what the weather. KNIT & CROCHET GROUP: Join the Troy Public Library for a bi-weekly stitching group from 10 to 11 am on every first and third Friday of the month. Whether you have experience knitting or crocheting or you want to start learning a new skill, this group is for you! COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 5 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. Residents and community members can call the YWCA-GCR at (518) 274-7100 to find out Tuesday’s menu. More information about this program is available online at www.ywca-gcr.org.

COMMUNITY DINNER: Redemption Church of Christ serves a free dinner every Tuesday from 4-6 pm at the church, 1511 6th Ave. in Watervliet. All are welcome. A takeout option is available. Delivery is available for those not able to attend in person.

STORYTIME LEARN & PLAY: At the Troy Public Library, 100 Second Street. 10:30-11:15 am. Join us at the Main Library for your child’s enrichment through stories, song, movement, and play! For ages 0 to 5 with a caregiver.

SIDEWALK WARRIORS: Each Thursday evening in the parking lot at 35 State St. in Troy, dozens of volunteers set up a large number of tables for Sidewalk Warriors’ weekly distribution. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 pm, no matter what the weather. BINGO: Rensselaer Elks Lodge #2073, located at 683 Columbia Turnpike, hosts Bingo every Thursday evening and the general public is welcome to attend. Doors open at 5 PM for players age 18+. Play starts at 7 PM. $1,300 in prizes. Food and refreshments sold.

KNIT & CROCHET GROUP: Join the Troy Public Library for a bi-weekly stitching group from 10 to 11 am on every first and third Friday of the month. Whether you have experience knitting or crocheting or you want to start learning a new skill, this group is for you! Participants will work together to stitch blankets and other needed items to donate to local homeless shelters and outreach groups. Participants are also welcome to work on their own personal projects. Bring your own knitting needles and crochet hooks or use what we have available. This in-person event is free and open to the public. No registration required. The Troy Public Library is located at 100 Second Street, Troy.

OUTDOOR FARMERS MARKET: The Troy Waterfront Farmers Market is held outdoors in the streets Downtown area every Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm from May through October and features over 100 vendors. Free parking is available in the City’s 5th Street Parking Garage, Riverfront Park, the Green Island Bridge lots and on city streets. TROY NIGHT OUT: Last Friday of every month, 5 to 9 pm in downtown Troy. Troy Night Out is an extended evening highlighting shops, restaurants, arts and culture that takes place on the last Friday of every month in downtown Troy.
