Dan Campbell to Miss Part of Rookie Minicamp

Dan Campbell has become the face of the Detroit Lions, and he was expected to take part in the team’s entire rookie minicamp. However, that’s not happening. Per reports, Campbell will have to miss at least the start of rookie minicamp due to some personal issues.

Dan Campbell to Miss Part of Rookie Minicamp Due to Personal Issues

The news comes from a several NFL experts and reporters, including the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News. According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Campbell will miss rookie minicamp for “personal reasons.” But, he adds that, “Campbell is expected back with the team later this month.” According to Justin Rogers of the Detroit News, Campbell will miss at least the start of rookie minicamp, “and potentially more time, while dealing with an unidentified personal issue.” Some good news, however, is that Rogers writes that, “A source familiar with the situation indicated the issue keeping Campbell away was not a major concern.”

The Detroit Lions have three days of minicamp practice, which takes place Friday (May 10) through Sunday (May 12) at their Allen Park practice facility. Those who take part are rookie draft picks, undrafted free agents and some first-year and tryout players. The Free Press notes that, “Several Lions rookies said during the draft they connected with Campbell during their pre-draft visit to Detroit and were excited to play for him this fall.” So, they may miss that engagement with Campbell.

The good news is that missing this rookie minicamp shouldn’t be a huge problem for the Detroit Lions. They’re coming off a winning season that saw them at the NFC Championship game for the first time in 30 years. Detroit also just hosted the NFL Draft, in which the Lions made some good picks. What’s more, Campbell’s record with the Lions has been improving every season. He went from that dismal 3-13-1 during his first season to 9-8 to 12-5.  The important thing here is that Campbell’s personal issue gets settled in a positive way, and that he can get back to his smiling self.

Lions fans are hoping for a repeat of last season, and although the NFC North will be stronger in 2024, so will the Lions “Our division will be really good again,” Lions quarterback Jared Goff told me during an exclusive interview at a recent Jared Jewelers charity event. “It was really good last year, and I think we have four really good teams; four teams with playoff aspirations. It’ll be hard.”

  • 7. Seattle Seahawks

    One thing I like about this list is that I’m not necessarily even picking teams that made it to the playoffs this year. I’m picking teams that I think could be strong enough next season. The Seattle Seahawks are one of those teams. Their new coach, Mike Macdonald, is the former defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. Enough said. This guy is golden. Seattle’s defense is going to improve drastically with him at the helm, and they could go all the way very soon.

  • 6. Buffalo Bills

    The Buffalo Bills missed the playoffs by a hair. They played so well against the Kansas City Chiefs, but it just wasn’t enough. Josh Allen is a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback, but he hasn’t taken them there. Will next year be the year? Maybe.

  • 5. Houston Texans

    The Houston Texans will be the team to beat very soon. They pulled off an incredible season with a rookie coach and quarterback. They’re just getting started. The team got first place in AFC South this season but lost in the divisional round to the Baltimore Ravens.

  • 4. Baltimore Ravens

    Speaking of the Baltimore Ravens, I’m still shocked that they fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game. I think pretty much everyone was surprised. But, Lamar Jackson is back next year, and he’s not going to let it slip away again. Next year could be their year.

  • 3. Philadelphia Eagles

    It was a massive decline for the Philadelphia Eagles towards the end of last season. Everything fell apart at the seems. But, the Eagles have legacy, and they have Jalen Hurts. As long as he’s healthy, the Eagles will be back next year ready to fight.

  • 2. Green Bay Packers

    Yikes. Can the Green Bay Packers really be this good already? They almost upset the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs this year. Jordan Love is the real deal. Watch out for this young team next year.

  • 1. Detroit Lions

    Okay, yes, I’m a Detroit Lions fan, born and raised. But, I think there’s reason to believe that the Detroit Lions can and will be back next year. They’ve had a taste of victory, and they liked it. Plus, golden guy Ben Johnson is coming back to Detroit, and he wants to take the Lions all the way. Jared Goff is playing fantastic football, too. The Lions could really make it to their first Super Bowl next season. What do you think? Let me know here.
