TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi, in a bilateral meeting with the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) President Dennis Francis on the sidelines of the 10th World Water Forum in Bali on Monday, May 20, stressed the country’s unwavering support for sustainable peace, humanitarian aid, and full UN membership for Palestine.
Indonesia welcomes the adoption of the UN General Assembly resolution on granting privileges to Palestinians on May 10 thanks to the support of 143 members, giving them almost the same rights as those granted to member states.
The privileges will be valid starting on the 79th session of the UN General Assembly on September 10, 2024. With these privileges, Palestine will be allowed to sit among UN member states, propose resolutions and co-sponsor resolutions, and fully participate in UN conferences and international conferences under the UNGA, among other rights.
“This resolution is an important step in efforts to promote equal rights for Palestinians,” Retno said in a press release on Monday.
However, she assessed that the resolution alone was not enough. Efforts to achieve sustainable peace, ensure the smooth delivery of humanitarian aid, and continue advancing full Palestinian membership in the United Nations remain fundamental.
The resolution on the privileges for Palestine was proposed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), stating that the State of Palestine is qualified for membership in the United Nations in accordance with Article 4 of the Charter of the United Nations and should, therefore, be admitted to membership in the Organization.
