IPL 2024: RCB knock CSK out by 27 runs in a thriller; reach playoffs

IPL 2024: In a twist, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) knocked out Chennai Super Kings (CSK), four-time champions and one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, from the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The RCB defeated CSK by 27 runs in Bengaluru on Saturday to secure a playoff spot.

RCB is in fourth place with 14 points, having won seven and lost seven. CSK is now in fifth place with seven wins and seven defeats, however, they have dropped to fifth due to a lower net run rate.

Despite a long legacy and a star-studded team, CSK's campaign was unsuccessful this time. This is only the third time CSK has missed the playoffs since the IPL's debut in 2008. Interestingly, all three incidents occurred during the last five seasons, illustrating the unpredictability of T20 cricket.

The first incident occurred in 2020 when CSK finished in the bottom two teams with 12 points from 14 games. Similarly, they had another dismal season in 2022, finishing in the bottom two with only eight points from 14 matches.

Notably, the 2022 season witnessed a change in leadership, with Ravindra Jadeja first taking over as captain, only to have MS Dhoni return to lead the side after a spate of dismal performances.
