Reggae Girlz World Cup players return to national squad

by lbwrene1645350

After a protracted dispute with the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), the World Cup playing Reggae Girlz have returned to the squad ahead of two friendly internationals against Brazil.

The senior Reggae Girlz who contested the World Cup, last donned the national colours in September of last year in the Olympic qualifiers against Canada.

Since then the players have been emrbroiled in a dispute with the JFF over payment of fees, among other issues, after which they were suspended by the federation.

However, it appears all has now been resolved, as 18 members of the squad that competed at the 2023 World Cup in Australia have been named in the latest squad which is set to arrive in Brazil on May 26 before returning to Jamaica on June 5.

Captain Khadija Shaw is out through injury, but senior players Allyson and Chantelle Swaby, Denesha Blackwood, Drew Spence, Trudy Carter, Tiffany Cameron and Rebecca Spencer are in the squad.

The likes of former captain Konya Plummer, Jade Bailey, Kayla McKenna, Atlanta Primus and Vyan Sampson are also included.

Kameron Simmonds, Sydney Schneider, Jody Brown and Liya Brooks are the other World Cup players in the squad.

The newcomers are Israela Groves, Amelia van Zanten, Davia Richards, Naya Cardoza and Lauren Reid.

Apart from captain Shaw, Kiki van Zanten, Solai Washington, Havana Solaun and Tierney Wiltshire are the other World Cup players who were not selected.

Meanwhile, Hubert Busby has been reappointed head coach of the senior Reggae Girlz team and will start his second reign with friendly matches against Brazil on June 1 and 4.

Busby held the position from 2020 to November 2021 when he was suspended indefinitely after reports surfaced in an English publication about allegations of sexual misconduct while he was coaching Vancouver Whitecaps in 2010.

The JFF on Friday stated that FIFA has cleared Busby since the investigations and he has replaced Xavier Gilbert who has reverted to his original role of assistant coach.
