Summer 2024 – Pate's Grammar School

SPORTS DAY

Our Sports Days last week were spectacular displays of Pate’s athletic talent. As a major House event, the crowds came out to support and got behind those attempting to smash personal bests and school records.
Congratulations to our record breakers, making Pate’s sporting history in our 450th year: Lulu M-E (Inter 300m), Victoria E (Inter Shot), Isla P (Senior High Jump), Maddie T (Inter 1500m, breaking the record held since 1982) and Ruben L, whose throw of 57.23m broke our 74 year old Senior Javelin record!

The sun was high in the afternoon sky, face paint was being eagerly dished out and Mr Derbyshire’s voice could be heard from every single corner of the school announcing to get ready for your race, it’s Sports Day.

While the school congregated on the field for the Track Finals on 8 May, the action was not limited to just that afternoon – throughout the week before, brave individuals were getting involved in the heats for the races during Lunchtimes and Games periods. From the 100m to the 1500m, students from each year group were participating for their house, earning points and places in the finals to come. What was most heartwarming to see was that the cheer extended to the House Officials, who were there every Lunch ferociously cheering on the racers with creative signs and clapping their hearts out. The immense talent on display was shown through speed on the track and the grace shown off-track through support for each other regardless of House, especially in the longer distance events. Rain or shine (more rain for Year 7s), the competitors showed up for their races in a great standard and some graciously filled in for those who unfortunately couldn’t make it, showing true sportsmanship throughout the events. Special mention to Steve from Beaufort (as well as Matilde) for committing to the atmosphere of cheer despite the horrid weather.

As results were being totalled and places in the Final were being allocated, the Field events took place on the 7 May with events ranging widely from discus and long/high jump to shot put and javelin. It was fascinating to see the contrast between the strength and power used in shotp ut, javelin and discus to the immense technique seen in high jump as competitors soared over the bar seemingly effortlessly.

Finally, it came time for the relays which, like the runners themselves, went past in a blur in the excitement surrounding the event. While some of the runners were worried about baton handling and the sprint starts, the House Officials were taking place around the inside of the track to cheer them on or even run alongside them the entire way like Vitaliy K decided to. It was fantastic to see everyone who ran commit so wholeheartedly to their stretch and to work so well with each other in order to finish the race.
Thank you to all of the teachers who were involved in organising this highly anticipated event and helping everyone to be on time for their races, and to each and every person who put themselves out there, especially to those who contributed to the first of many Richmond wins this year!

SENIOR HOUSE UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE

Thank you to all those who supported House University Challenge, including our House sponsors. Congratulations to Beaufort, the ultimate winners at the gong – and to all House teams for tackling some really tricky questions!

Senior House University Challenge was an extremely fun, fascinating and enjoyable event. Definitely one of my favourite house events, every house was really competitive – but not without keeping a sense of good sportsmanship and sense of humour! Although Beaufort did manage to come out victorious, Gloucester and Pembroke were on our tails the whole time so the victory wasn’t easy, but I’m glad we managed to keep together under pressure and answer some really challenging questions. Some of the questions included ‘Which person was first to criticise the deterioration of European morality?’ And ‘What does SDLT mean?’ Which really kept us on our toes. I’m really looking forward to House University Challenge again next year, and well done to everyone who participated and my amazing teammates!
