MADISON MAINSTAYS AS. YOU SPIN MY HEAD AROUND A TALE OF ONE TOWN, TWO BARBERS. WE’RE A DYING BREED. THERE’S ONLY A FEW OF US AROUND. NOT IN MADISON, APPARENTLY, WHERE RICH SANTINELLI AND FRANK PRADO ARE BUZZING WITH BUSINESS DESPITE BEING DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET. I CAN DO 3:00. SURE. SEE YOU AT 345. BOTH GIVE A QUICK CUT. WE’RE VERY FAST AND HAVE CLIENTELE THAT GIVE THEM THE UPPERCUT. WHO GIVES THE BETTER HAIRCUT? OH, HE DOES RICH DEFINITELY 100%. MY WIFE ALWAYS LOVES WHAT HE DOES. SHE SAYS HE’S NEVER GIVEN YOU A BAD HAIRCUT. AND I HAVE TO AGREE, FRANK. BUT THEY DO DIFFER IN BOTH PERSONAL STYLE. HE TOLD US HE HAS A BETTER FASHION SENSE. THAT’S ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD. THANK YOU. WELL, HE WEARS THE SMOCK. I DON’T, IT’S JUST EASIER FOR ME TO YOU KNOW, SLIDES OFF. WHEREAS, YOU KNOW, I USED TO TRY WEARING A GOLF SHIRT, THEN GO HOME AT NIGHT AND YOU FEEL LIKE A WOOLY BULLY. SO THIS IS ALL LOCAL SPORTS DOWN HERE. THESE ARE ALL MVP’S. YOU’RE A COWBOYS FAN? I AM BIG COWBOY SINCE THE 70S, AND TO A DEGREE, CLIPPING STYLE. FRANK DOES NOT SHAVE AROUND THE NECK. I THINK THAT’S BECAUSE HE HAS THE SHAKES. NO, I’M ONLY KIDDING. YOU KNOW, I THINK WE’RE ALIKE, BUT NOT COMPLETELY. DOES HE GIVE A GOOD HAIRCUT? ARE RICH. HAS BEEN CUTTING CUSTOMERS HAIR AT TONY’S BARBERSHOP, NAMED FOR HIS FORMER PARTNER FOR MORE THAN SIX DECADES NOW. FRANK AT HEAD START HAIRCUTS FOR 44 YEARS. FIRST SHOP, THE ONLY PLACE EVER LOYAL. HE IS A NATURAL SIDE EFFECT OF A SMALL TOWN CHAIR. I CAME HERE WITH MY DAD WHEN I WAS NINE, BUT ON OCCASION THEY HAVE LOST CUSTOMERS TO THE OTHER WALTHAM. IS THAT A LONG WALK FROM OVER THERE TO HERE? VERY LONG. IT’S TOUGH. IT’S BEN DEPENDS ON THE TIME OF DAY. THAT’S. BUT AS WE FOUND OUT, IT IS LESS BATTLE OF THE BARBERS HERE AND MORE ABOUT FOUR DECADES OF FRIENDSHIP. AND A BARBERSHOP REALLY IS A CENTRAL HUB OF THE COMMUNITY, A PLACE OF CONNECTION AND FAMILY. RICH’S DAUGHTER GRADUATED BARBER SCHOOL AND WILL BE JOINING HIM SOON. AND THAT IS CHRONICLE FOR TONIGHT. THANKS SO MUCH FOR JOINING US. US, EVERYONE.

Rich Santanelli has been cutting hair at Tony's Barbershop in Madison, Conn., for more than six decades now. Directly across Boston Post Road, Frank Proto, owner of Head Start Haircutters, has been a barber for more than four decades. While the longtime friends joke about their close business rivalry, they insist they support each other. Well, sometimes..."Ninety-nine percent of the people who come are fantastic. If they're not," jokes Santanelli, "I send them to Frank."
