Listening to Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 back to back!

Album/Song Discussion

I like to treat UYI 1 & 2 like a double album as opposed to two superstar albums. It just feels right listening to them back to back. That’s a solid 2 hours and 32 mins (152 min)! At least after Coma and before Civil War I get the chance for a much needed pee break lol. Anyone else out there that HAS to listen to them back to back? I know I can’t be the only one lol. Also which do you prefer? For me it’s UYI 1 and I feel like I’m in the minority there, but my favorite song (Estranged) is on 2.

I love both but 2 is my favorite. Estranged and Locomotive are my two favorite GNR songs and I actually prefer the alternate lyrics to Don’t Cry.

I’ve always preferred the alternate lyrics too, it always surprises me that other people typically don’t. It’s just because I feel like Axl goes so hard on that last verse, it just feels more powerful.

The melody change in the third verse is what gets me.

I can listen to them back to back.

My fave is UYI2, there's a few on the first I didn't like for years but now I can appreciate. Don't damn me, Bad apples, Dead horse & Coma for me are the 4 consecutively perfect songs one after the other, I always replay those

I love those four as well. But I actually really love The Garden and Garden of Eden as well. The opening tracks are amazing too. Right Next Door to Hell and Dust & Bones are two top ten original GN’R songs for me and Live and Let Die is my favorite cover outside of the combined cover of T. Rex’s and Soundgarden’s Buick Makane / Big Dumb Sex. Soundgarden is actually my favorite band. I love Faith No More as well, so if I could go back in time for one concert it would be the UYI tour with SG and FNM opening for them, especially since Badmotorfinger (1991) and The Real Thing (1989) were both the latest albums by those bands at the time - which happen to be co-favorites alongside SG’s Superunknown and FNM’s Angel Dust. What an absolute monster lineup!

can’t choose

Honestly I think I’ll end up there too. I’ve just heard more songs off UYI 1 more often. It usually takes a couple listens for my brain to REALLY appreciate the song (musically and lyrically).

Coma is probably my favourite song purely because of the storytelling (and length) it has, and being able to sing for almost 10 minutes straight is impressive. However I'm warming up to the Chinese Democracy Album now as I've literally just discovered it (I'm a newer fan)

I’m listening to them in chronological so the Spaghetti Incident is up next! Currently doing the same with Led Zeppelin and Physical Graffiti is up next for LZ! In My Time of Dying is my fave song by them and being a double album I have very high hopes for it!

When they were first released, 2 was my preferred but as time went on 1 became my favourite and is definitely my preferred listen. But both remind me of a fantastic part of my life. So much great music from that time period.

as long as it ends with My World, I feel satisfied! 😝

Only satisfied? It puts me into a socio-psychotic state of bliss.

hey. you wanna talk to mayhhhh?

Let’s do it

I really liked them too. They should have been a legit double album. Probably be the Best one of the 90s. I was about 17 when they were released it was a very exiting time.

I would love to listen to them back to back, I wish I had the time. Maybe I need to make that time. I go back and forth on my favorite. Currently it’s 1, it’s just so relentlessly rocking.

UY1 one has Dead Horse and Bad Apples and Dont Damn Me. Perfect album.

I don’t have to listen back to back, but I had to buy them both together on cassette, years later on cd and after that on record-I prefer One, if for anything, there’s 8 must have songs on that one compared to 5 on 2

They definitely go back to back and are a double album released separately for promotion

It's easy to look at UYI I & II as a double album, but they're really not.

They're a quadruple album.

Each half of UYI is a double album in their vinyl release.

Imagine the Beatles putting out two White Albums at the same time, or Zeppelin putting out two Physical Graffitis. That's what Guns did.

I'd hang out with you.

When they came out I was listening to them nonstop for a year. Just swapping cassettes in a boombox on my desk while doing homework
