Do I need "Documents relating to the Irish citizen parent" if I'm applying on the basis of my grandparent?

I'm applying for FBR on the basis of my grandfather. I have his Irish Birth Certificate and his death certificate. My father was not born in Ireland, nor an Irish Citizen. I'm unclear whether I need to provide his (US) birth and death certificate, since he's not the reason I'm qualified. Thank you.

If your father's father was born in Ireland, your father was an Irish citizen. So he is the "Irish citizen parent" referred to, and you have to provide the docs.

Yes you need birth certificates to prove place of birth and lineage, especially if they where born overseas grandfather would be the same

Makes sense. Thank you

Also your father is an Irish citizen by way of having a parent born on the island of Ireland.

Ah! I didn’t know that happened automatically. Thanks for clarifying that.

Yes, you need to prove direct lineage. Look at the instructions on the FBR site. I had to provide birth marriage and death certs for my Irish grandfather, birth marriage and death certs for my father and birth and marriage certs for me. Luckily, since it was the male side of the family, we all had the same lastname/surname, and there were no name changes, estrangements, or nicknames. It could not have been more straightforward, but still I had to provide 2 extra docs and it took 22 months....

Provide ALL the documents listed and it’s relatively straight forward process. Not quick because they have a large backlog - mostly brexit related I expect but you do need to provide everything asked for to make demonstrating lineage easier.

Yes you need to provide them

Also don't forget your grandfathers marriage certificate.

I didn’t think they would need it because it didn’t change his name. Isn’t it just to justify a name change?

This is a common mistake. The application is clear. Marriage certificates are required if they were married. It's not only to show a name change. Long form marriage certificates often have the parents' names on them, so they are more evidence of your relationship to your grandparent.

You have to supply your, your parent's, and your grandparent's marriage certificates.

Holy-moley! Thanks for the info!

[] Original civil marriage certificate (if married) of Irish born grandparent

They don't specify that its only needed for a name change just if they are/were married

Your father can apply for his passport online. He will receive his within 2 months

That’s a good suggestion, and one I wish he would have followed before he died in 2007. 🙂 I didn’t even know he was an Irish citizen!
