'Never felt this bad' - Wayne Rooney's damning Manchester United reaction speaks volumes

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney was almost lost for words when reflecting on the Reds' campaign this season.

United have been incredibly under-par this campaign. After suffering early exits in the Champions League and Carabao Cup, the Reds have failed to build any sort of momentum in the Premier League.

Before the clash with Arsenal, United sat eighth and will not move up the league even with a victory due to their inferior goal difference. Such form has led many to question Erik ten Hag's future and Rooney found it difficult to build a case for the Dutchman after seeing a stat that showed the club at their lowest position since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of kick-off, Rooney said: "It's so difficult. It's very unpredictable.

"As Mikel [Arteta] was saying, you come into Old Trafford and you've no idea what performance you are going to get or what team you are going to see. Potentially, they could win the game.

"I've come and have no idea what is going to happen here, so that is the disappointing thing. Throughout the season, the goals they have conceded, the lack of desire at times.

"We finished seventh when David Moyes was here, but it never ever, I know Moyes lost his job, but it never felt as bad as what it is now." United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was in attendance at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon alongside Sir Dave Brailsford.

MEN Sport understands the INEOS founder is unconvinced by Ten Hag so far and the United manager's future at the club is uncertain.
