The leads are good, casting is getting it right, the stories look good but the plots are too thin. It will be interesting to see what Steven Moffat creates. A darker in depth story perhaps. I feel as if Russell is waiting for the final episode just to get going.

Ncuti and Millie are carrying the show right show.

Kind of silly, but enjoyable enough. I'm not completely there yet with Ncuti, but I think I prefer him when he's quieter and more serious. Nice to see Lennon and McCartney save the world.

I think this was the worst episode of Doctor Who there has been since 2005 it makes the worse of the Chibnil episode look quite good in comparison. RTD is clearly playing to Disney here it’s just getting to silly especially with that song at the end, I want the storytelling and drama back what RTD did in his original run and what Moffat was brilliant at. 1/10 will try think of some positives but nothing comes to mind though and for anyone looking who not seen it don’t want to spoil it, let’s just see if you didn’t like space babies then this episode is even worse.

    Jinkx was mesmerising!

Agree, I’m not quite there with Ncuti yet either and although I like the lighter moments, I preferred when he was serious. I think I’ll be totally onboard by next week when he gets his I Am The Doctor moment.

Guess they didn’t have the rights to use any Beatles songs. Kinda thought there would be more Beatles in the episode. Just expectation though.

Fantastic performances from Ncuti, Millie and Jinkx. Maestro already a classic/iconic villain! Fantastic, 👏🏻

    Really enjoyed this episode.

Haha. And there you go. RTD is a madman. How he goes from the genuine contender for all time series low of that first episode to this is why you have to love him.

Not perfect. Ruby is still FAR too confident and non-plussed by all the mad things happening to her. The 'banter' between the two of them is still Series 2 level annoying.

But if that was put aside I'd have voted this excellent.

I was enjoying it at first. Engaging and flamboyant baddie played in a suitably over the top manner. Would be more than happy for them to return. Ncuti and Millie seem to have calmed down quite a lot from the last installment. They had much better chemistry and the exposition felt natural not shoehorned in.

That said, I really didn't like the fourth wall breaking and especially disliked all the singing at the end. I can't even necessarily explain why, I just did. The singing I was expecting (and hoping for) was some actual Beatles tunes given that Disney own the rights. So that was a bit of a letdown, too.

All that was enough to knock it back from a provisional "good" to "average", for me.

I'd like it to get a bit darker and grittier before too long into the series, please.

Don’t worry, he who waits is almost here.

Maestro was better than I hoped, yes they went from being the end of the universe to beaten fairly easily but that’s been a complaint about Dr Who basically forever. Maestro almost reminded me of a 12A version of Bob from Twin Peaks meets Divine.

I love the more surreal feel, the fact the budget is bigger, the Susan talk, it was funny and creepy, the world building is excellent, I love the snow motif.

Disagree the worst episode since 2005 in my opinion all the good bits of Doctor Who are gone and RTD is just recycling the sane old ideas.

A perfect example of how much better it is when scenes are given some time and space to breath and the cast are actually able to put in a performance without the nightmare of fast cutting, meaningless sass, brainless exposition dumps and that never ending bloody soundtrack.

Ncuti was so much better in this than he has ever been and so was RTD's writing because of that.

    More of this!

Ah, okay. Given the plethora of Beatles stuff on Disney I'd assumed it was fair game, never mind.

The reality is they’d want millions for a show like DW to have Beatles music worldwide in perpetuity.

I honestly thought it was the worst episode of Who I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen every one that still exists.

Ok it wasn’t as boring as The Sensorites, and yes I thought it actually started quite well. The idea of losing music and what that might mean was an interesting one.

But to have that as the way to banish the baddie? I’d have been embarrassed to write it. And just as I was thinking it was terrible but at least it’s over now, we get a baffling song and dance number? Why? What on Earth was that for?

As a sidenote I have no issues with the acting/production etc, it’s all excellent. But really? Battling via a fiddle and a few notes on a piano? How did he know almost all the right notes?

    It was absolute bobbins.

That’s my issue really, it seems less about storytelling and more about spectacle. Who cares that it’s a lame way to beat the baddie? Never mind how the Doctor knew 90% of the right notes. Forget about that and watch this dance routine while you remember the floaty musical notes that looked snazzy. Plot and logic you say? Nah that doesn’t matter here.

I’ve always defended Who through the years when it was seen as uncool etc, because the stories and the writing were generally pretty good. But I can’t defend that episode.

After the travesty of the Chibnall era, I honestly thought we’d get back on track with RTD2. But after 37 years as a fan maybe it’s just not for me any more.

Will comment more and vote later, but after hmmmm-ing my way through Space Babies, I had a whale of a time with this one! Ncuti and Ms Monsoon were both excellent here. The lad’s got range and thankfully this was a much better paced episode and really a lot of fun. This one I’m actually looking forward to rewatching in company this evening!

Gosh.. I don't know how I feel about this one.

I could have done without the song and dance ending - somewhat takes you out of the show.

A few random notes for now:

Ruby some super important mgguffin all of her own.... AGAIN - the companion takes on some super important role and it's been done before.
At least the Doctors hair explained - hes got a lot of wigs.
Sonic screwdriver completely different colour - how, why?
Jinkx for me was as I feared, sorry - a pantomime villain.
This was exactly the same as Pyramids of Mars when Sarah Jane went back to the future thinking it would be fine only to see it destroyed.

I appreciate these 8 episodes have a lot to do in showcasing the breadth of the show - but Im not sure brand new viewers have been given enough to draw them in. I dont feel those 2 episodes really encapsulated what the show can be.

    Time will tell.

Excellent. Really enjoyed it. Nciti again was excellent...I found ruby's acting a bit erratic but it'll improve as she learns the character more. Jynx monsoon was great and I love the concept of....oh wait ..spoilers so 8m not gonna go there but I thought they were excellent.
Really liked the references to old lore, the new lore and the twist.

More than anything, ncuti already feels like the doctor...I'm not sure Jodie ever did (due to poor writing and very little development in onscreen persona) and also this made me realise how much I disliked the fam (Graham aside obvs)!

    Would recommend for sure.

No we need less of this and proper Doctor Who coming not whatever this is that’s aimed at the CBeebies audience.

It's possible that this episode was elevated after an absolutely dreadful episode about space babies, bogeyman monster made out of bogies that turns into a dog for some reason and nappy fuel but I did enjoy it.

I think Ncuti is a great doctor, I like Ruby. I like that I actually like the characters and root for them. It happened too rarely for me in Chibnall's era sadly.
I like the concept of this one. A lack of music in our lives removes an emotional outlet and destroys the world as we know it.
I love the villain. I thought they did a great job chewing up the scenery and it fit the superpower they had that they would act in this melodramatic way

I was a bit put off by the strictly pro dance rammed in at the end of the episode but about halfway through I realised that the show can sometimes just be about having fun, we shouldn't overanalyse everything and just enjoy it for what it is.

I could take or leave the song and dance number at the end. It was well choreographed and quite a spectacle, but it felt a bit left field. I know the Beatles are tight buggers when it comes to licensing their music, but that whole thing would have worked so much better if the BBC had used some of their Disney money to get the rights to at least one Beatles song. The end sequence would have been so much more joyous if they were singing the naa-naa-naas of 'Hey Jude' (even if the date's wrong) or 'All You Need is Love'.
