Liverpool are set to spend big under Arne Slot to avoid any teething problems upon the Dutchman's arrival at Anfield - but whilst there could be a decent-sized pot of money to spend, it won't be splashed on a "surprise" move for Barcelona midfielder Pedri, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Pedri has burst onto the scene for Barcelona over the past four years, but became notable for winning the Golden Boy award back in 2021 at the age of just 18; and incredible feat for any footballer. His form has seen him linked with moves abroad, and Liverpool are thought to have been chasing the diminutive midfielder ever since he became a regular in the Barcelona side. But Romano believes that is a move that won't happen for a multitude of reasons.

Pedri: Liverpool Transfer Latest

Pedri has been linked with Liverpool for quite some time

Pedri warming up for Barcelona

Writing in his Daily Briefing, Romano said that despite links touting the Spaniard with a move to Merseyside, Pedri is "committed" to Barcelona, and there is nothing doing in terms of him joining the Premier League outfit. He said in response to the surprise story:

"Despite what has been reported elsewhere, I can guarantee that there is nothing between Pedri and Liverpool, or between Liverpool and Barcelona for Pedri - the situation is completely quiet. Pedri is really happy and always super committed to Barcelona, and he’s a crucial part of the project at the Nou Camp."

Pedri has previously been linked with a move to the Reds, with fees of £70million being bandied about in the past; though with Barcelona having a superb young team that boasts the likes of Gavi, Pau Cubarsi, Lacine Yamal and more, offering minutes to their youngsters could kickstart a new era similar to the La Masia-heavy period of dominance that came about in the mid-2000's with the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi claiming trophy upon trophy for the club.

It is unknown as to how much money Slot will have to spend in the summer, though Liverpool's midfield ranks are arguably their strongest position of any - and so other targets may be prioritised to keep them in a title hunt next year.

Pedri Would Fit Perfectly Into Liverpool's Team

The young midfielder already has over 150 senior appearances at just 21

The Reds already have several playmakers in their side; Alexis Mac Allister is the obvious choice, but along with Dominik Szoboszlai and Harvey Elliott, the trio make up an extremely creative team that are adept at fashioning chances for the likes of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz amongst others.

Pedri, however, would be an astute addition to their team in the unlikely event that he does join Liverpool, though. More deep-lying and generally in the ilk of his current boss Xavi, Pedri has already featured in 139 games for the Blaugrana, registering 18 goals and 13 assists in his time on the north east coast since joining from Las Palmas aged 16.

Factor in that he has also made 18 caps for Spain to date ahead of EURO 2024, with his first appearance for La Roja coming shortly after his 18th birthday - and it's clear to see that Pedri has a huge future ahead of him wherever he plays his football. But that won't be Anfield for the time being, as Romano claims.
