Summary

  • The recently announced John Wick spinoff starring Donnie Yen will likely resolve the cliffhanger from Chapter 4's end-credits scene.
  • Both Caine and Akira from Chapter 4 are deserving of their own spinoff movie.
  • Donnie Yen and Rina Sawayama stole the show in John Wick: Chapter 4, making them standout characters for the franchise's expansion.

A new John Wick spinoff movie starring Donnie Yen is officially in the works, giving the franchise the perfect opportunity to pay off John Wick: Chapter 4’s end credits scene. From whether Keanu Reeves’ character is still alive to how John Wick 5 can happen, John Wick: Chapter 4’s ending raised a lot of questions. While most of them have yet to be answered, the franchise is set to deliver on one of the fourth film’s biggest teases for the future. Despite the uncertainty regarding a fifth installment now that Wick is presumably dead, the John Wick franchise continues to expand.

A few months after the release of Chapter 4, the John Wick universe received its first TV spinoff, The Continental: From The World Of John Wick. The franchise is also expanding on the big screen, with Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, set to premiere on June 6, 2025. A new John Wick TV show was also recently revealed to be in the works. The list of upcoming John Wick projects just got bigger, though, as Donnie Yen is set to reprise his role as Caine in a brand-new spinoff movie.

John Wick's Caine Spinoff Will Resolve The Character's Akira Feud

While not much is known about Donnie Yen’s upcoming John Wick spinoff, the movie is expected to take place after the events of Chapter 4. In other words, John Wick’s Caine spinoff movie is bound to resolve the character’s feud with Akira, which was teased in John Wick: Chapter 4’s post-credits scene. Caine’s fate in John Wick 4 was left open, as Akira showed up to complete her revenge right before the credits rolled. Caine and Akira’s scene at the end of Chapter 4 set up a continuation of their story, which is now possible thanks to the new spinoff film.

Whether Rina Sawayama will reprise her role as Akira in John Wick’s Caine spinoff movie has yet to be confirmed, but it would make sense to bring the character back considering how Chapter 4 ended. The rivalry between Akira and Caine, which came to be after the latter killed the former’s father, is the perfect setup for a spinoff movie and should not be resolved offscreen. Even if John Wick’s Caine spinoff is not entirely about Akira, the upcoming movie should at least offer a conclusion to the story that began in Chapter 4.

Both Caine And Akira Deserve A Spinoff Movie

Donnie Yen and Rina Sawayama stole the show in Chapter 4

One of the best things about the John Wick movies is how every installment introduces new, charismatic characters who steal the show – from established action stars to up-and-coming actors. In John Wick: Chapter 4, the breakout characters were Donnie Yen’s Caine and Rina Sawayama’s Akira, both of whom delivered some of the film’s best moments. Caine, despite his friendship with Wick, served as one of the movie’s antagonists due to the leverage the High Table had on him. Akira was only in a certain portion of the film but still made quite the first impression.

Cained killed Akira's father, Koji Shimazu, played by Hiroyuki Sanada.

Donnie Yen elevates every movie and franchise he is in, which is why a Caine spinoff film after John Wick: Chapter 4 is no surprise. Interestingly, John Wick’s Akira was Rina Sawayama's first movie role, yet the character was one of the film’s standouts. Akira could also carry her own spinoff movie, regardless of whether she will be in the upcoming Caine film. Fortunately, it seems like John Wick’s newest breakout characters will continue to be part of the franchise.
