LCU Wins Lone Star Conference Tournament With 10-8 Victory Over UTPB

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 4 Lubbock Christian Chaparrals fought back from a 6-6 tie in the eighth inning to win in exciting fashion, rallying to earn a 10-8 victory in the 12th inning over the UT Permian Basin Falcons Saturday. With the win LCU claims the Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship and automatically qualifies for the NCAA Regional Tournament.

Sophomore Coleson Abel (3-0) got the win out of the bullpen for LCU (41-14). The left-hander went four innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits, allowing five walks and striking out one. Sophomore Chris Rhoades also pitched well, going 4.2 shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking two and striking out two.

Senior Carson Ogilvie led the Chaps at the plate, going 5-for-5 with two RBI. Senior Ryan Ball also put together a noteworthy performance at the dish, going 3-for-6 with a double and four RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Chaps were trailing 5-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. LCU scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Ball.

The Chaps kept the deficit at 5-3 before closing the gap further in the sixth. LCU scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Hayden Blair, which tightened the Falcons lead to 5-4.

After the top of the sixth inning the game was delayed for about four hours due to a weather delay.

After the delay, UTPB built their lead to 6-4 before the LCU offense got back in action, tying the ballgame at six in the eighth. Ogilvie's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run output in the frame for the Chaps.

The game remained tied until the very next inning, when LCU got rolling again on offense. Sophomore Jake Sherrard crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Chaps, bringing the LCU advantage to 7-6.

UTPB fought back to tie the contest at seven before the Chaps reclaimed a 10-7 advantage in the twelfth inning. UTPB put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Chaps held on for the 10-8 win and the LSC Tournament title.
