Irish stars to watch out for on the TV BAFTAs red carpet

Another Sunday, another red carpet even recognising the efforts of some of the biggest and brightest stars of the small screen.

The annual TV BAFTA Awards are happening this weekend in London and for the second year in a row comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan will be taking on hosting duties.

While they are very funny, we will all be tuning in to see if the luck of the Irish that was missing from the Eurovision in Malmo will instead be working its magic for the Irish at the Royal Festival Hall...So who are we rooting for?

There are five Irish stars up for TV BAFTAs this year in a number of different categories.

First up, Róisín Gallagher has been nominated for Best Female Performer in a Comedy for her role in The Lovers.

The Northern Irish actress also stars in the critically acclaimed The Dry and was also nominated for an IFTA this year for her portrayal of recovering alcoholic Shiv Sheridan.

The role of Janet in The Lovers is very different to Shiv. She's a supermarket worker, who cares about nothing and no one who ends up getting romantically involved with political broadcaster Seamus, played by Johnny Flynn.

Cork woman Máiréad Tyers is going up against Róisín for the Best Female Performer in a Comedy for her part as Jen in the Disney+ series Extraordinary.

It's a British superhero series, with the second season recently released. Jen, Máiréad's self aware character, works in a costume shop and doesn't have any superpowers.

Everyone else around her does, and she and struggles to deal with it. Siobhán MacSweeney, of Sr Michael fame, plays Jen's mum in the series.

Next, we'll be rooting for Éanna Hardwicke, who has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his work on The Sixth Commandment.

The four-part series is based on the murders of Peter Farquhar and Ann Moore-Martin and also stars Timothy Spall, Anne Reid and Sheila Hancock.

Éanna has already had award success with this production- he won the IFTA for Best Lead Actor just a few weeks ago. It was the Cork man's first IFTA win, although he has been nominated before.

No nominations list should be without Sharon Horgan, in our humble opinion, and BAFTA recognised that!

This year, the talented writer and actor is on the shortlist for Leading Actress for her performance in the BBC drama Best Interests.

It's a powerful drama, also starring Michael Sheen and Irish newcomer Niamh Moriarity, all about a family who are at odds with doctors who say their daughter with a life-threatening condition should be allowed to die.

Last but by no means least this year, Graham Norton has received his eighth BAFTA nomination this year, and is hoping to add to his current tally of five wins.

He's been nominated in the Entertainment Performance category, while The Graham Norton Show has also been given a nod in the Comedy Entertainment category.

The Crown leads the nominations this year with eight nods, while honourable mentions go to Black Mirror who secured seven and Happy Valley, Slow Horses and The Sixth Commandment who got six.

The Bafta TV Awards will air on BBC One on Sunday at 7pm.
