Mary J. Blige talks about child support payments that “upset” her

For Mary J. Blige, it was the pain in her wallet from her divorce drama — with her ex-husband and former manager Kendu Isaacs — that inspired her 2017 LP Strength of a Woman.

“When I made this album, I was angry because I had to pay maintenance every day… But you know, I always say things – even when I'm going through a bad time – and I needed to express my inner strength. ” This not only encapsulates her journey to self-empowerment, but also sets the stage for her larger initiative to empower other women.

The Strength of a Woman Festival & Summit, born out of her personal struggles, has grown into a significant cultural movement. The festival is in its third year and moves from Atlanta to New York City. It is experiencing exponential growth and attracts visitors from all over the world. As a new Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Blige wants to bring the event “home” to New York and highlight its importance as a “hug for our culture.”
