Considering a Master's Degree in the UK - Imperial College London - What to do?

ToAbroadOrNot?

Hi everyone,

I'm feeling pretty lost right now, so I'm turning to Reddit for some advice. my_qualifications - I'm 22 and just graduated. I've been accepted to study MSc in Economics and Strategy for Business at Imperial College London starting this fall. But it's going to cost around 50 lakhs for everything, including living expenses.

Here's the problem: My parents aren't too keen on me going abroad. They worry about me being so far away and being the first in our family to do something like this. Plus, my family is big on business, and my dad thinks it would be smarter to invest the money needed for my education into starting a business instead. He doesn't want me working for someone else.

Honestly, I'm not sure what to do either. I don't see myself fitting into a corporate job for too long either. Originally, I planned to go study, get some experience, work for a bit to pay off any loans, and then come back to India. But now, I'm worried about finding a job in the UK, and I don't want to miss out on the chance to study at a top-notch place like Imperial College London.

So, I'm asking for your advice. Have any of you been in a similar spot? What did you decide? Any thoughts or experiences you can share would really help me out as I try to figure this all out. Thanks a bunch.

It depends on your end goal, if it is not to settle in UK then I don't understand why you want to go. I have known ppl who have money who want some foreign experience and their parents fund them or they are well off to take loans. But if you are not keen on working in the economics domain I don't think it's a great step. Also if you are really passionate about economics I would suggest LSE, Oxford and LBS, they have better alumni network and better job outcomes for economics.

Not every study who go abroad wants to settle there. I didn’t want to study economics purely. I saw the modules of my selected course and I really liked it. Oxford and LBS does not have very great courses when it comes to economics. Oxford only has financial economics that I didn’t want to go for. My course is really great for certain domains like strategy and consulting.

I don't think there's a 'right decision' here. Both, you and your dad are right. There is no need to worry about going abroad though, it's pretty smooth these days.

I think what you really need to think about is the time frame in which you can pay off your loan and introspect regarding why you want to go to Imperial. Is it just because it is a top college or is it because you think that the education you get there will help in the long run.

What do you mean when you say it’s pretty smooth these days?

I agree with you. The only reason behind me going to Imperial was the course that I selected. And Imperial being one of the best in UK is a cherry on the cake. Of course my education will help me in the long run but It’s hard to convince my parents because of the above reasons I listed.

They worry about me being so far away and being the first in our family to do something like this.

There is nothing to worry about, the transition will be smooth. I think your only challenge would be to find accommodation since afaik Imperial doesn't provide accommodation for postgrads.

Honestly, I think its a great degree.

Your post grad salary would range between 30,000 pounds - 40,000 pounds per annum on average.

However , London is expensive. I have some experience living there and a few friends are still there.

Reach out to me on my personal chat and maybe I can answer some specific questions you have about your life there.:)

Indeed it is a great degree!! I’ll text you

Imperial is an excellent brand - if your goal is to study in a good business school with strong ROI, its the way to go

Totally agree with you!! That’s why I don’t wanna let go of this opportunity.

Brother can you share your portfolio?

If you’re middle class and thinking of taking out a huge loan, do know that things are quite difficult in the west these days, even in the USA.

So do know the pros and cons and decide accordingly. After all, you’re the best judge of your circumstances

I will be taking out a huge loan around 40 lakhs. Even if we are not middle class, I don’t want to burden my parents.

Profile?

"Har kisi ko mukammal jahan , nhi milta, kisi ko zameen, kisi ko asmaan nhi milta"..the situation is completely opposite for me, my parents wants me to study masters abroad, but seeing the current situation and my lacking interest in studies, I don't want to go. Always been passionate about starting business. Asked them to invest 1/4 of the amount they are ready to invest in education loan in my business, but nah, that sounds too risky to them.

I feel you bro :(
