Wolfpack Posts 13-5 Victory Sunday at Disharoon Park

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 23 NC State baseball team captured its third series victory over a top-10 team with a 13-5 win over No. 10 Virginia on Sunday afternoon at Disharoon Park.

NC State (29-19, 15-11 ACC) notched its 10th win over a ranked opponent in the eight-run victory over Virginia, slugging three homers and 11 hits in the series-clinching win.

The Wolfpack struck first with three runs in the opening frame. Garrett Pennington and Alec Makarewicz reached via an HBP and a walk, respectively, before Brandon Butterworth launched a two-out, three-run homer for a 3-0 lead. Butterworth's blast was his second of the weekend and NC State's fourth home run of the series.

Virginia (37-14, 15-12 ACC) took its first lead with four runs in the bottom of the second. The Cavaliers scored all four runs with two outs in the inning, dropping in a pair of bloop singles to prolong the multi-run inning.

A four-run fourth inning vaulted the Wolfpack in front for good on Sunday, re-establishing a three-run cushion at 7-4. Matt Heavner led off the inning with a single before the Cavaliers recorded back-to-back outs to put two down in the frame. NC State then scored all four of its runs with two outs in the frame, starting with a two-out RBI single from Pennington to tie the score at 4-4.

Makarewicz doubled into the left-center gap to score Pennington all the way from first base, giving the Pack a 5-4 lead. A wild pitch allowed Makarewicz to speed home from third base for a 6-4 Wolfpack advantage before Virginia left fielder Harrison Didawick lost a fly ball in the sun in left field. Butterworth's high fly ball dropped into the Disharoon Park outfield and allowed Cozart to score for a 7-4 lead.

Didawick led off the bottom of the fourth with a homer to cut Virginia's deficit to 7-5.

After a pair of zeroes on the scoreboard in the fifth, Pennington's standout weekend continued when the first baseman launched a two-run shot over the batter's eye in center field for a 9-5 Wolfpack lead. Pennington's towering home run not only marked his third home run in as many games, but it also marked his fourth multi-hit game of the week.

Luke Nixon led off the top of the seventh with a triple into the right-center gap. Nixon slid headfirst into the third-base bag for his first-career triple. Heavner then lifted a sacrifice fly for a five-run Wolfpack lead at 10-5. The Pack's freshman left fielder then helped NC State push across three more runs, launching a three-run homer over the Virginia bullpen for a 13-5 lead in the eighth.

In his first start since March 29, right-hander Logan Whitaker tossed 4.2 innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Southpaw Cooper Consiglio (3-4) earned the win for NC State after pitching the final 4.1 innings for the Pack, fanning three batters while allowing just one hit. Consiglio sat down the final six Virginia batters in order to seal the win.

Pennington posted his fourth multi-hit performance of the week, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored, three RBI and a home run. Virginia centerfielder Bobby Whalen robbed Pennington of his second homer of the game and fourth of the weekend, leaping at the wall to snare Pennington's deep drive to center field.

Starting pitcher Owen Coady (1-1) suffered the loss for Virginia.
