Mars boys roll in 25-1 playoff-opening rout

Normal Day in the Office

ADAMS TWP — In turning away Seton LaSalle, 25-1, in a WPIAL Class 2A playoff quarterfinal on Wednesday night, Mars rewrote “Star Wars: A New Hope.”

The seven-time defending district-champion Planets (15-3) — Western Pa.’s boys lacrosse version of the Death Star — weren’t having any of the Rebels’ antics.

Thirteen Mars players either scored a goal or aided a teammate in doing so in the victory at Mars Athletic Complex. The visitors were held scoreless until 6:41 had passed in the final frame and were down 24 by the time Jack Lyons found the back of the net.

Junior Ian Coulter had six goals and an assist for the Planets, while senior Enzo Grieco deposited four markers and helped on three more.

“It was a big night,” Planets coach Bob Marcoux said. “Especially for the seniors. It was potentially the last time they’ll ever play at the MAC, so they were definitely ready to go.

“They were focused on the job at hand.”

In a span of 46 seconds in the first quarter, Mars netted four goals, the first three of which by Grieco. The Planets led by 11 after the first 12 minutes and 18 at halftime.

Earlier this month, Mars lost games in consecutive days to Ohio teams, Hilliard Davidson and Worthington Kilbourne.

“It’s always good to play against top-notch competition,” Marcoux said. “I think that that’s the best way to get better. We try to challenge ourselves with the schedule every year and play the best teams we can. ... They play a little bit (of a) different style in Ohio, too, which is good for us to see.”

The decisive victory over Seton LaSalle (11-5) is just the first instance of the Planets being able to apply lessons learned in the postseason.

“I think coming off of those Ohio games, there was definitely a different vibe in the air at practice,” Coulter said. “It was definitely a lot more competitive and we brought a lot more focus. ... I think that’s kind of what came into this game.

“Once you get out there, it’s just a normal day in the office.”

Ryan Blake and Logan Truitt each added three goals for Mars, while Jack Tirch and Gael Avalos both had a pair. Jack McKenzie, Sean Brennan, Dylan Phillips, Grant Weaver, and Henry Saver also got on the board.

Jack Dwyer and Ben Bowser notched assists.
